I am here to bust a few myths about making it online as serious online business owners. Working online or earning an income from an online business is not impossible, if you’re expecting me to say that, you’re wrong. After all, I AM making money online and I would only be saying I am a big fat failure is I said that online businesses are load of….well, a bunch of lies. They’re not.

It’s possible to find an income online, keep a family afloat, feed children, live luxurious lives online. With the growth of the Internet, anything is possible…so, why not making money? In fact, with just the Internet (albeit, a telephone line, a modem and a computer), you can literally not move anything aside from your fingers and make money every single month! And happily too.

The only problem is that a lot of people are jumping into the online bandwagon expecting to make money the next week, the next month or the next three months. The ludicrous claims by unscrupulous netpreneurs who claims that they can help people may tons of money (along the lines of six figure incomes) instantly doesn’t help much either! Oh, I’ve had my fair share of mistakes. Took in and lapped everything up, swallowed hook, line and sinker a couple of times. I am sure there are many successful netpreneurs today who would admit that they fell for quite a few scams themselves before and LEARNT FROM IT.

Well, here are a couple of online business facts for you to digest:-

1. There is no instant money on the Internet

Now, think about it, on the Internet, everyone is faceless. You don’t know the seller, can’t see the seller, can’t even hear him/her and the only way you know that POSSIBLY someone human is behind all of this is the fact that your email was answered. As an online shopper, would you part with a single precious dime for anything that they say they can deliver without proof? Without testimony that this business is legitimate and won’t run away with your money the moment you click the ‘pay now’ button?

Nothing. There’s absolutely nothing that guarantees you that the business is legitimate. There’s nothing to assure you that they’re send you whatever they say they’ll send you. So, it’s a business that is loosely based on trust, recommendations from others, honesty and professionalism. Think about TV commercials for cars. They offer a perfect picture of "justification."

Here's how they work:

First, there's a stirring image of the car itself – beautiful, stylish, new. (In your head: Wow! That car looks cool...)

In the background, there’s a mountainous landscape (In your head: Wow! That's rugged... like me!) or a five-star hotel (In your head: Wow! That car would give me status."

Then, there’s a shot of the car driving by the ocean. Put it all together and you have an effective 20-second movie that’s designed entirely to appeal to emotion.

But wait, the car commercials don’t stop here. way. At the end, they "get down to business" with numerous bits and pieces of information – the size of the engine, statistics on fuel economy, speed, weight, interior space, rankings in national survey, financing information and customer satisfaction reports, and so on.

It flashes by at lightening speed, usually so quickly that you can't read it.

But Don't Worry: All This Data Isn’t Meant To Sell The Car.

It’s included to make YOU feel good and justify the decision you’ve already made. (I’m gonna buy that baby now or when I got some money because it's the SMART thing to do!)

The lesson: People CAN be convinced, when the facts are explained, when the risk is taken away, and when their deepest, most selfish desires have been tickled and nurtured and seduced.

Take a look at yourself - inside and out. Where do you live, what job do you have, how do you relate to your friends and family? What interests do you pursue, what adventures do you have?

What do you truly want from life? Do you want wealth and success, happiness and peace of mind? Do you want a family and a yard, a yacht or a sports car? Where are you going? Do you have a particular goal or are you just wandering through life?

You can accomplish anything you want in life - that's true. Once you have a particular goal, you can fulfill that desire by straightforward commitment and total conviction.

But what if you don't know what you want? Maybe your goals are small ones - like losing some weight, or buying a new car. Maybe getting a promotion or finding a mate. Whether you want a bigger apartment or want to be a corporation president, any avenue of prosperity and achievement is open to you if it is truly what you want.

No goal is too small; no dream is too big. And even if you aren't clear on your desires, you can tap into your subconscious mind to get the answers and to find the paths to success.

Can you change your life - do you want to? Can you picture yourself as your most perfect image of accomplishment? How does it feel? If you have the desire to attain goals, the commitment to follow through and the ability to creatively imagine yourself in the position you dream of, you are more than halfway there.

Although money is the obvious desire, it is usually not the final goal. Indeed, money can, and does buy happiness - up to a point. Once you have enough money to be financially secure or to purchase the material objects you want, the true desire might be something else.

Love is the goal of every person's heart. Whether it is love of a mate, or a family, or respect and recognition from peers and fellow workers, love is the ageless pursuit. The mystics say that love is the sole purpose of life - to give love and to find it.

But love comes in many forms. Not only is there the overt display of affection or true inner feelings, but there is the self-respect and inner contentment that goes with accomplishment. For some people, true peace of mind will never be attained until they complete some creative tasks or achieve certain heights in business.

Many people seek the authority that comes with a good position in a job. Along with that can come recognition and fame. Although you may want the money that is associated with high management levels, many people simply seek that satisfaction of working from the inner circles.

The goal of every person regardless of background and material desires, is health. A sound body is the gift that will get you to the other goals. Even a new diet and exercise plan can give you more energy - the energy you'll need to accomplish success.

Adventure and travel is a driving force for many people. They may seek jobs that involve travel, or they may be looking forward to taking time off to visit the exotic ports and see the other side of the world. If you don't want a long journey perhaps you'd just like a few weeks in a sunny resort or the luxury of a summer and winter vacation each year.

And then there is creativity and self-expression. What about the book you're going to write or the watercolor class you'd like to take? Creative expression is a wonderful inner release that boosts confidence and gives you something to accomplish.

Finally, regardless of wealth and health, expression and love everyone is looking for peace of mind. That's not to say emptiness of mind, but to be rid of petty worries and confusion, to be finished with fears and live in total awareness. It surely is the ultimate lifetime goal.

My wife really gets the credit for the title.

Here's how it happened.

Years ago, she and I were both truck driving instructors for a major national carrier at their Dallas training facility. Every week, we got a new batch of about 30 people to train, most of whom had never driven a truck (that's a big truck, semi, tractor-trailer). Our trucks had 10 forward gears spread between two ranges, had to be double-clutched (if you don't know, don't ask - it takes too long to explain), and all shifting had to be done at specific engine RPM's. Upshifting was a different technique from downshifting, and we threw in tricks of the trade such as skip-shifting, speed-shifting, and rolling into second (don't ask, I told you).

Needless to say, many of our students, most of whom were bright and willing to learn, had difficulty learning the shifting techniques. My wife ran a tutor room at night at the motel where the students stayed, and students could come and ask questions about almost anything to do with the course, including shifting. It was a popular place. So popular in fact, that one night she tutored a guy for half an hour before she realized he was training with another company! We'll save the story about the night the Dallas SWAT team had a shootout there for another time, but just for the record, yes, she did throw a full grown man to the floor.

Anyway, one night a student kept complaining about how hard it was to learn to shift all those gears. She sympathized with him for a while, and gave him some tips and pointers, but he just wouldn't shut up! She politely responded for a little longer, but finally her patience snapped, and she uttered those fateful words,

"Well! A shovel only has ONE gear."

I said that most of the students were willing to do whatever it took to learn everything we threw at them, because they realized what the rewards would be. Without dwelling on the trucking industry too long, they had the chance to earn over $30,000 in their first year, and after that, they could double or even triple their income if they handled it right. For people with no formal training in other fields, or with only experience in areas where income potential was limited, this was the way up, and my wife and I got to help a lot of these people get their start.

However difficult the training was, the reward was usually worth the effort to most of the people we trained. We saw our share of the others as well. The ones like the guy who was actually asking why the company didn't buy trucks that were easier to shift, when my wife shot him down.

I've been in and out of network marketing since 1994, and regularly active in internet marketing since about 1999, and I have seen my share of people who wanted the program to be do the work for them. Just a few weeks ago, in fact, I got an email from a gentleman asking about a business opportunity I was involved with. He wanted to know what kind of income he could expect the business to "earn him". He even went so far to say that if he couldn't be told how much to expect to earn and how soon he would begin earning enough to replace his current income, he would consider the business to be a scam.

The earnings anybody can expect to realize from any internet or network marketing endeavor, and quite often the average job, will depend on a lot of things, including how much effort someone is going to put into their new business or position, and how long they intend to expend that effort. As a matter of fact, if I had to pinpoint one major factor of success for most network or internet marketers, I would just have to say such seemingly simple things as, "Stick with it no matter what." "Don't give up." "Try, try again."

Honestly, if the business, product, or program is good, and if there is a market for it, sustained effort on your part, not only in selling the product or program, but in learning about the benefits of the product or program to the customer as well, will be one of the deciding factors in the success or failure of your venture.

I very often mention two friends of mine who became millionaires simply by handing out a brochure to everyone they met or came in contact with for three years. They never sold anybody anything! Or I can use myself as an example. Even today, although I make a very good living on the internet, I am not a salesman, and have only what I consider to be a basic skill at internet marketing. However, I also have dozens of websites, most of which are simple as simple can be, that I built (after teaching myself html) and promoted regularly for almost three years before I began receiving regular income from the internet. As I have continued to build more and more informational sites, I have made more and more sales of more and more products, and my income has grown.

It's probably never going to be completely easy, but if you are willing to study, to learn, to practice, and to make the required effort and not give up, someday you will succeed.

Even if they forget to visit your site again (and let’s face it; with all of the work and family demands placed on all of us, no matter how good your site is, this is a possibility) if they are subscribed to your ezine you have a golden opportunity to remind them why your site is fantastic. Secondly, when done tastefully, it gives you a chance to earn a little extra through advertising. Finally, there are relatively few other ways you can build a relationship with your site’s visitors. And as all good salespeople know, building a good rapport with your customer is key to making the sale.

There are a few golden rules you should understand before hurrying to write your first edition, however. While you may be able to convince a visitor to sign up for an ezine when they visit your site, your job as a publisher doesn’t stop there. To get them to actually open it every time it lands their inbox and not hit the delete key, you need to develop a plan. I've been working with software on the web since 1997, and have had the pleasure of experiencing the different ideas, strategies and personalities of more than three hundred software companies. During this time, I've witnessed an astonishing mix of products, features and marketing methods - some of which have worked better than others.

One of the questions that I am frequently asked involves the elusive Perfect Product. Developers want to know what their next software should be, what the market is looking for, what sells, and how they can get rich as fast as possible. The truth is, I have no idea. I can certainly spot a terrible product that's never going to make any money, but identifying the next big seller is a very different thing. As much as some may argue otherwise, there are no accurate, quantifiable characteristics of great software - and even if there were, there are a vast number of other factors that play an equally important role in the equation. Over time, I have come to realise that much of what makes a successful product comes from the people who develop and sell it. Rather than focusing on the traits of good software, it can often be far more beneficial to take a good, hard look at the characteristics of good software authors.

This article isn't a "To-do-list for the successful software company". If that sort of thing worked, you wouldn't be reading it for free right now - I'd be selling it and making a fortune! This is merely a collation of some of the more interesting patterns and trends that I have been able to observe over the years. All of the characters referred to are based on real software authors, but I've altered their names and mixed up their circumstances to the extent where they won't even be able to recognize themselves. Nevertheless, this is a great opportunity to learn from some of the masters of the shareware game - whether it be from their mistakes or their successes.

Reaching for the skies through your wallet - willingness to spend.

Most of us are working for the same reason - we want to make more money. Most of us have also heard the adage about how you have to spend it to make it, but this is a truth that is frequently ignored. Over the years, I've witnessed a large number of companies slam on the brakes at the very first mention of parting with their hard-earned cash.

Advertising and promotional activities should be a critical ingredient of any company's marketing mix. By only ever considering free opportunities, you're limiting both your growth and visibility. Darren Hansen is someone who has truly grasped the essence of this truth. Darren has a small company in the US, and at last count he was selling eight quite distinct products. He believes that spending is a vital component of doing business, and is always open to suggestions. If it saves him time, makes his company look good, eases his workload or has any chance of increasing his sales, then he's all ears. He may not always say yes, but he'll always listen with an open mind.

The measured risk road to achieving dreams.

Risk taking isn't limited to your budget. As frightening as it may be, there is a whole world of risks and possibilities out there, and you need to be willing to consider them. New technologies, new markets, new advertising venues - all of these could potentially provide you with fantastic opportunities if you're willing leap into the unknown every now and then. Caution is a good and healthy instinct, but being terrified and always sitting back to see what happens next could be your downfall.

If a company isn't prepared to take risks, they are effectively confining themselves to a very limited number of opportunities from the outset. If you let your competitors take all the risks while you look on from the safety of your desk, you could be handing over your future sales. If you consistently limit your company to only ever going after guaranteed results, you're never going to get anywhere, and you know it. No risks equals no hope of ever achieving your dreams.

Personality and perseverance vs. pointless procrastination.

We all know that the driving personality behind a successful company is vital - that much is obvious. There is much that could be said about this particular fact, but I'd like to keep it short and sweet. I'm a firm believer in one particular idea: there are leaders that talk, and leaders that do. There's nothing revolutionary about this, but it's true. And invariably, the doers are more successful than the talkers.

Nathan Peters is a doer. He runs a well-known company with a very substantial range of products, and is a classically democratic leader. He believes in a very open relationship with his employees, and is forever interested in hearing what anyone has to say about his software. But one of his skills is that he knows when it's time to stop talking, and is capable of ensuring that ideas quickly are turned into action.

Jefferson Gough is a talker. He has great ideas, and will talk to anyone and everyone, at length, about the exciting plans he has for his software. "Should be ready real soon", he declares. "A couple of months, at the most". He spends hours talking to his partner, explaining what his visions are and what he thinks they're capable of. But no action is ever taken - and a year later, Jefferson is still in the same exact place, talking about his brilliant plans.

Most people are a mix of Nathan and Jefferson - if you truly want to be successful, try to make sure you do more and talk less.

Bending the right way; flexibility and accommodation.

Whether you're working alone or as part of a team, it's very easy to become set in your ways and blind to other ways of doing things. Of course, a successful software company has every right to admire their own creations. Nevertheless, they also need to acknowledge that their way is not always the only way, or even necessarily the right way.

With the right attitude, a company should be able to mould their ideas around the needs and wants of their customers - not the other way around. Being able to take criticism isn't enough. You need to be hungry for it, and you need to be able to pick out golden nuggets even from the most mundane or unlikely of sources. Remember, you're not going to buy your own software, other people are. Adapt to their demands, and try to leave your personal likes and dislikes behind you.

Don't go around complaining about bad or nightmare customers, either. It's a waste of time, and unhappy customers are an unfortunate fact of life when you're doing business. Bad businesses fail to respond to what they have to say, and don't stop to consider that there might be a lesson in it for them. Remember how "the customer is always right"? That applies to your customers, too.

Giving it away to sell.

Don't be a stingy software author. The value of your software is in direct proportion to the number of people that know about it, and you need to realise that some people's attention is more valuable than others'. If you're lucky enough to have caught the attention of a newsletter or magazine editor, don't even think about offering them a trial version of your software. Give them the full version, and tell them that you'll give one to all their colleagues, too. If someone is in the position of having an audience, and they really like your software, you need to do everything you can to help generate their enthusiasm. What you don't want to do is remind them that they need to buy the full version after thirty days.

In the same vein, don't be too scared to make an old or basic version of your software free. It can be a brilliant way to reach new customers, even if they're not in a position to pay for your product at the moment. The person who is looking for a basic, free solution today might well be the owner of next year's successful company. Make sure that when their time comes and their budget increases, your product is the one that they're already familiar with.

Honesty and recognition of limitations.

You may be able to write great software, but nobody's good at everything. If you can't create good graphics, then don't even think about redoing your own website. If you can't write, don't bother trying to produce the copy for flyers, press releases and websites. Recognize your own limitations and weaknesses.

Tim Korea runs a small software company in the US. Their products all offer well thought-out and innovative solutions for everyday problems, and most of them are based on ideas that originated from Tim himself.

"I'm an ideas man", Tim is fond of saying. "I scribble them down, piece together an ugly, working demo, and then I pass it on to my team. We have three code writers, one graphics person, and we use an outside company to write our copy."

Tim's ideas are unique, innovative, and cater to people's needs. But his biggest strength is that he knows what he's good at, and what he should hand over to others.

Vision without "vision".

Let's be straight here - I'm not a big fan of self-help books. One thing they all seem to have in common is that they love to talk about vision - a business without a vision is like a ship without a captain, and so on and so forth. Vision is portrayed as a critical factor for success.

I myself have a very different vision of, um, vision. For the successful software company, vision isn't a broad, all-encompassing platitude. It's about the ability to spot opportunities, and to recognize a winner when it rears it's head.

Gary Weinberger runs a small software company in the UK. Together with his wife, he sells a small range of business-based products that help organise one of the more important assets - money. While there is no shortage of accountancy applications out there, Gary saw an opportunity that none of them had addressed, and realised the potential immediately.

Spotting the opportunities is relatively easy. Implementing them, and turning them into good software solutions that people want and need is quite a different story. A successful software developer will recognise what people are looking for, understand how people work, and then tie the two together into a good, solid benefit-based solution that people can use and buy.

Running a business, not a business plan.

All this talk about vision leads me smoothly onto one of my pet hates: business plans. As a moderately cynical Englishman, I find that business plans too often are associated with awful, cutesy mantras like "failure to plan is planning to fail" and all those other self-empowering pieces of nonsense.

Undoubtedly, many business plans are based on common sense. The problem is that they are often taken absurdly far, and seem to take on a life and purpose of their own. Worrying about the business plan takes up more time than worrying about the business - it is obvious that this can't lead to anything good.

Without a doubt, it is important for a successful software company to know where they're going, and where they want to be in X years time. But it's equally important to know what's realistic, and what amounts to little more than a hopeless dream. Yet again, you need to strike the correct balance between optimism and sheer madness. And any company who wants to be successful has to be prepared for a long and fairly slow process, with a wide range of different hurdles along the way.

Tim Korea used to work for a. COM start-up, and spent far too many nights sleeping under his desk. After two years, he realised that he could be doing this on his own, and doing a better job in the process. So he quit his job, and started off his company as a one-man show in his basement. He produced a business plan, and outlined a three-year plan for his company, where he envisaged a team of five in a small but comfortable office. Today, his plan has come true.

Tim's business plan succeeded because it was built on a number of unique strengths. The first was that he was utterly realistic. He budgeted to make a loss for the first twelve months, he planned on spending money on outside talent from the outset, and he never allowed his imagination to pull him too far away from reality. Nevertheless, his main strength was that it took him one single day to research, plan and write his business plan. Day two saw him turning his basement into his office, and day three saw him start working on his software.

In five years time, you may well have the world's best business plan for the world's worst product. Don't allow yourself the self-defeating luxury of procrastination via a business plan. It'll get you nowhere.

Style, taste and selling the skin-deep.

Often overlooked and impossible to imitate, style is one of those attributes that you either have or you don't. Imitations just don't cut it. While this may mean that you or I are forever doomed, there is still hope for our companies. Even if our own sense our style leaves much to be desired, there are plenty of companies out there who can assist us.

Take advantage of the professional services that are available, and ensure that your software looks every bit as slick and professional as you know it is. Think about it - there is nothing that isn't judged by appearance. It would probably be possible to fit some of the power, smoothness and sophistication of a BMW engine into any old rusty body - but would people look at it and want to buy it? I think not.

Whether you're polishing an interface or working on your website, you need to understand that the packaging is a critical factor. If you keep telling yourself that people will be able to look past your clunky graphics and appreciate the advanced features within, then you're wrong. Very wrong. A brilliant application that looks like something out of the Windows 3.x era is never going to make it.

Courage, bravery and slingshots.

As I mentioned earlier, being overly cautious can be a dangerous thing for a businessman. Jumping headfirst into anything can also be a seriously bad idea, but sometimes things that initially appear to be ill-thought through can prove to be a very clever move indeed.

Nathan Peter's company competes with one of the biggest and most widely known software producers in the world. Many might dismiss his venture as hopeless and doomed to fail, but Nathan would have to disagree. He believes that no matter how dominated a market may be by one single company, there is always room for someone else. And his company is living proof that you don't need to be the biggest to do very well for yourself.

There is no point in reinventing the wheel, least of all in a market where there already are thousands of minor variations. However, if you can offer something significant that gives you a unique advantage, you should be milking it to the full. If you're a David offering something that Goliath can't provide, it's time to whip out your slingshot and face him head on. Just make sure that people actually want what you're offering. Well-placed courage has a high chance of success - foolhardiness doesn't.

Managing without the micro - the art of delegation.

Many of us need to wake up and face the truth - we can't do everything, and we can't control all the people all of the time. The inability to delegate is by far the most common weakness in small businesses, and it can actually be quite a serious threat. If you cannot learn how to pass on tasks to other people, then you will forever be limited by the number of available hours in each day. Believe me, there are never enough.

Even if you have, slowly and grudgingly, learned to delegate, you need to make sure that you don't start sneaking back in under the guise of keeping an eye on things. If you're a self-confessed micro-manager, you need to realise that you're paying someone not do the work they're supposed to do. It's a no-win situation for you both.

Having said this, you also need to ensure that you don't take it too far and lose touch with what is going on. Tim Korea remembers when he trusted someone too much. "This was a great guy", he recalls, "with a lot of really good ideas. At the time, it seemed like a good idea to keep adding to his workload. Unfortunately we overdid it, and by the time we realised that he simply couldn't cope, everything was in a really bad way."

If you're lucky enough to be in a position where you can have total faith in a partner or employee, keep the lines of communication open and monitor from a distance. But don't get too involved - let them get on with their work while you get on with yours.

Time control - the importance of deadlines.

Running your own business shouldn't mean that you have an unlimited amount of time to do whatever you want. Irrespective of the size of a company or the scale of a project, a timescale needs to be imposed and adhered to from the start. Otherwise, plans will never be realised and goals will never be achieved.

Darren Hansen favours the open approach. As soon as he starts bouncing around ideas, he delegates different responsibilities to everyone involved. And with Darren, there's always a deadline. You'll never see a member if his team getting an email with a vague request asking them to look into the practicalities of switching over their database. Instead, they'll be asked to prepare a one-page summary of the issues involved, and to have this ready by Friday morning.

>From Darren's point of view, it's not about cracking the whip. He believes that without a deadline, most people will take longer than they should over pretty much anything and everything. By offering full support but insisting on strict deadlines, Darren believes that efficiency becomes second nature to everyone involved - himself included. As far as he's concerned, deadlines mean more regular new features, new versions and new software. All of which translate directly into more sales.

Expansion through multi-basketing.

Expansion shouldn't only be about employing more people in bigger offices. It shouldn't just be about going from download to shrink-wrapped, or going from a $29 advertising budget to the dizzying heights of advertising in print. It's about expanding from the outside, and growing from within.

Heinz Kleinwald runs a one-man show from Germany. But while everything rests on his shoulders, he's very eager to outsource - in fact, he's got it down to a fine art. Heinz uses outside companies to design his website, create his logos, write his copy, prepare and distribute his press releases, keep on top of his marketing, handle his CPC campaigns, take care of his accounting and even take his phone calls.

Even though he's on his own, Heinz now sells four very different applications. Each targeting a different market, and each with their own website. Amazingly, Heinz even has the time to release reasonably regular updates, although he admits that he's nearing his limit for what he can deal with. Not that this has stopped him working on product number five, scheduled for release by the end of the year.

Darren Hansen's company came into existence with two products. Both reasonably similar, with identical markets. When Darren realised that he was onto a good thing, he invested time and money into building them up. As the products' name and popularity grew, so did their sales. Yet even as new monthly sales records were being broken, Darren did not pause to rest on his laurels even for a day. He was already working on two new products, targeting completely different markets. It's fair to say that he's never looked back.

Darren is a firm believer in not carrying all your eggs in one basket. Effectively, he's now carrying eight different eggs in six very different baskets. Even if there's an omelette or two around the corner, Darren's future looks good.

An ear to the ground; looking beyond the bubble.

Nobody could ever dispute that business information and intelligence is critical, no matter what your product is, and software authors are no exception. If there's a new Windows operating system around the corner, you need to know how it's going to affect you long before it's released. And if there are new development technologies such as. NET, you need to be in the know.

It should also be obvious that you need to know what your competition is up to. Industrial espionage is not a good idea, but there are many legitimate ways of monitoring people with products that are similar to yours. Failure to do so might cost you more than you realise. There are tools, services, newsletters and periodicals that can make this task quicker and more reliable. Take advantage of them, and use them to the full.

If you act as though your business exists in a bubble, sooner or later you will be burst from the outside. And you won't even have seen it coming.

Perspective - tying it all together.

This article isn't intended to be a checklist for the ideal personality. Some may argue that great leaders and business people are born, not made. Personally, I don't believe that we can alter or mould all aspects of our personality, and I don't believe that you can achieve success through a series of tricks, mindsets or self-programming.

But I do believe in one of the oldest tricks in the book - imitating those who get it right. If we manage to learn from their more positive traits, we can only gain and prosper. So throw away your self-help books, stop spending so much time trying to believe in yourself, and start doing good business. Be seen, be sold.

Identity theft has become one of the most frequently reported crimes. But, maybe you are asking yourself: What is identity theft? I am glad you asked.

Identity theft is the wrongful use of your name, birth date, social security number as well as financial records and banking information.

An identity thief obtains this information by going through your trash, or by pretending to be a bank officer, or government official, or by creating a false web site that looks similar to your on-line banking web site, your on-line auction web site (ebay, for example), or your on-line shopping web site (yahoo shopping, for instance).

This personal information is used to secure credit cards, bank loans, or to make furniture, and/or electronic goods purchases in YOUR name.

However, when identity theft occurs, you have certain rights under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). In order to effectively respond to suspected identity theft you should or can:

(1) Place a fraud alert in one of the three consumer reporting agencies and that agency will notify the other two consumer reporting agencies regarding your fraud alert.

The agencies are :

Equifax at 1-800-525-6285, or on the Internet at www. equifax. com

TransUnion at 1-800-397-3742, or on the Internet at www. transunion. com

Experian at 1-800-680-7289, or www. experian. com

(2) Obtain a copy of the identity theft report from a federal, state, or local police agency such as the FBI, State Department of Justice, or Sheriff’s office. You can find more specific information pertaining to the identity theft report at www. consumer. gov/idtheft.

(3) Put an initial theft alert in your consumer report file that will be valid for 90 days.

Yet, you can place an extended alert in your consumer report file that will remain valid for 7 years – if you also provide a copy of the identity theft report.

(4) Receive “free” copies of the information in your consumer report file from each of the 3 consumer reporting agencies.

The extended alert gives you the right to receive 2 “free” copies in a 1-year period to help you remain aware of any fraudulent accounts open in your name.

(5) Obtain copies of applications and similar documents from creditors, banks, and other businesses used to open fraudulent accounts – but you must make a written request to the addresses of these businesses.

(6) Get information about debts as a result of identity theft from a debt collector. You may request the name of the creditor and the amount of the outstanding debt.

(7) Have a credit reporting agency block specific information in your consumer file that was caused by identity theft. It is important to remember that you must provide a copy of the identity theft report mentioned in item 2 above.

(8) Prevent businesses from sending identity theft transactions to a consumer reporting agency by the making a written request that includes a copy of the identity theft report.

Please note that all of your communication should be sent by certified mail with a return receipt requested in order to confirm receipt of your correspondence.

Yes, you are right, that is a great way to have multiple sources of income, or to earn multiple stream income. However, you won’t be able to concentrating on each of them if you joining multiple programs and attempting to promote them all at the same time.

As a result, the maximum potential of your affiliate program is not realized and the income generated will not exactly be as huge as you were thinking initially it would.

Therefore, the best way to get excellent result is by joining just one program, which at least pays a 40% commission. Then give it your best effort and promote it with passion. Once you see it is already making a reasonable profit, and then you may consider joining another affiliate program.

This technique has to do slowly but surely. There is really no need to rush into things, especially with affiliate marketing. With the way things are going, the future is looking real bright and it seems affiliate marketing will be staying for a long time too.

3. Not buying the product or using the service.

As an affiliate, you main purpose is to effectively and convincingly promote a product or service and to find customers. For you to achieve this purpose, you must be able to relay to the customers with certain product and service.

It will difficult for you to do if you have not tried these things out by yourself. Thus, you will fail to promote and recommend them convincingly. You will also fail to create a desire in your customers to avail any of what you are offering.

Before you sign up as an affiliate, try the product or service by yourself first, then to see whether it is really delivering what it promises or not. If you have done so, you will know the advantages and disadvantages of the product or service; you can also write an article about product or service review as living testament. And then your customers will feel your sincerity and have truthfulness in you. This will trigger them to try the product or service out by themselves.

Many affiliate marketers are paying dearly for their actions because makes these mistakes. To avoid falling into the same situation as others, try to follow this above three simple rules. Then you will have an easier life.

How is your web site promotion going? Getting frustrated? I felt muddled too, until I discovered what few new web marketers know about — organic marketing.

Organic marketing is just as it sounds—“natural”. In essence, you build a network of connections to your site using natural and simplistic methods. The best part is…it costs you nothing but your time.

Many individuals are still under the impression that to promote their web site, they either have to pay for each click they get on Google or they have to hire a web-site promotion firm at $1000+ per campaign in order to get exposure.

Take it from me, I started into the web marketing business with NO marketing knowledge. I taught myself. How did I do it? The answer is simple: START ASKING QUESTIONS!

Once I started asking questions and finding the answers, the pieces began fitting together. I soon discovered that there are as many options to marketing my web site as there are places to purchase a car—I don’t have to go to just one purchaser or have one strategy.

I want to share my knowledge with all of you who are feeling discouraged. In my last article called, Alleviate Your Internet Marketing Stress, I provided an overview of organic marketing and some of the basics. Read that first to gain a broad understanding of the concept.

In this article, I want to give you an overview of steps to marketing your website using this approach.

First, start with an analysis of your site and your keywords. Your keywords will ultimately determine how relevant your web site is to interested customers. Use the keyword analysis tool called www. wordtracker. com to come up with a list of keywords you think people will type in when they search for your site.

Second, check your site to make sure those same keywords are located near the top of the page. That way the search engine spiders “bots” will be able to read them and immediately determine your relevance. Make sure your keyword density (# of keywords vs. total words) is appropriate, i. e, don’t go overboard!

Third, create readable pages. Readable pages mean that your website pages can be easily read by the search engine robots or “bots”. There is a complete checklist to making sure your pages are “readable”. Get a checklist off of the Internet and go through it. Some examples of items to consider are: make sure you’re not using frames, examine your title tags and description tag, ensure the navigation system on your site is not created using JavaScript, etc.

Fourth, register with search engines. Search engines represent the single most important source of new visitors to your web site. Your goal should be to get your sites submitted to (at least) the following engines: Google, yahoo. com, Teoma/Ask Jeeves, Open Directory project and MSN. com. These are the best places to start. Get onto each of their sites, and find out how to submit your site…and then do it.

Last, link to other sites and encourage them to link to yours. Establishing links to your site is one of the best ways to give the impression of a useful site. If you’re site is a popular place to be for visitors to be, it will directly affect how high you rank in the search engines. There are strategies for doing this and you need to find out how to boost your position using link popularity. Again, get a list of how you do this off of the Internet. Some elements that may be part of your strategy could include: avoiding links with no value, connecting to a group of websites related to a particular subject, etc.

Many people know that link building plays a vital part in high search engine rankings. But it must be done right. Otherwise, sites with fewer links will rank higher than yours ! How is that possible ? Let me explain.

Google made links important a couple years ago. They started to virtually ignore on-page factors (keyword density, title etc.) and focused almost exclusively on Links.

Google counts number of links to a web page (link popularity) and what those links say about a page (link reputation).

* Link Popularity and Link Reputation

So there's a common first mistake. Many people don't know the difference between link popularity and link reputation. They think any link's good. Did you know that 20 links, with the hyperlink text containing your keyphrase, can outrank 50+ links without a keyphrase ?

note: keyphrase means the words you want your page to rank high for e. g. if someone searches on the keyphrase 'email marketing' then you want most of the links pointing at your page to say, 'email marketing' in their hypertext link.

Ever wondered why only your home page gets traffic ? People get links to their home page only, and don't even know they're making a mistake ! Google, in particular, sees a web site as a collection of individual pages, with each one ranking individually.

So, for example, if your home page gives info on 'email marketing', then you want lots of links saying, 'email marketing'. If one of your sub-pages gives info on 'email software' then that page needs its own set of links saying, 'email software'. Most people think any high ranking for their home page will automatically mean high ranking for other pages in the same web site. It doesn't. Each page ranks individually.

* Internal Link Structure

Link Building isn't just about external links. You need the right link structure within your own site. Many people make the mistake of using graphic navigation bars. Search Engines often can't even follow these links, so your sub - pages don't even get indexed. It's beyond the scope of this article to get into detail on the important internal linking structure, but you can make a good start by using text links instead of, or in addition to, graphical navigation links. Then the search engines can follow your links.

* On-Page Factors

Finally, not all search engines treat Links with the same importance as Google. Yahoo, MSN, Inktomi make much more use of on-page factors. And guess what ? You control on - page factors, so there's no excuse for getting this wrong. Be sure to get your keyphrase into title, description, headings and body text. Don't overdo it and try to spam the search engines with excessive use of keyphrases, but be sure they know what your page is about.

With the right link building strategy, your search engine rankings will soar, and you'll start getting all those visitors that will electrify your web business.

Get rich scams exposed

I don't know why, but I guess it has to do with the fact that I believe that most people are basically "good", and as a result I was "sold" by these hyped up marketing schemes again and again, even after being scammed by yet another ! Ouch that hurt! Finally after being consistently let down and scammed again, I just got FED UP and PISSED!! I then decided to finally get to the bottom of this fascination we all have with these "GET RICH" products programs and services, and to find out if there really were any REAL and most importantly CONSISTENTLY PROFITABLE programs for making money on the internet!

I have actually contacted the people behind every "get rich" website I could find in my extensive research. I posed as an investor and managed to persuade the owners that I was someone intent on buying their website business. This way, once the big dollars were being dangled in front of them, they would give me free access to their members areas to review the websites and products I would be buying!, Well as I mentioned before I was completely repulsed and disgusted by 99% of what I found! (no big surprise after the 200th website I investigated!) You know what ? Most of the owners (91%) boosted about how many people bought their bogus programs! Here is what I continually found time and again:

* Links in their products that did NOT work!

* links to their other websites asking for MORE MONEY!

* No help for customers after buying their Program!

* No email support after purchase, no email at ALL!

I realized that these so called "GET RICH" products and websites were completely misleading SCAMS and worthless. And you know what? The owners totally knew it! But they told me they were very happy and gleeful on their way to the bank! (laughing all the way!!!) Surmise to say I failed to reply when I was contacted about purchasing their websites and products! Interestingly while doing all this extensive research on all these bogus websites and rip off programs and Get Rich Scams, I did find a few reputable business men that sold PROFITABLE programs that actually do make money for their customers.

I found that the business owners were just every day people similar to you and me that had found strategies that worked to make money online regularly and consistently. I thoroughly checked out their programs and websites and I was very impressed with the wealth of current and practical strategies and information that they provide. Their products really work! Their programs and websites on making a living on the internet are making people a $100 to $300 per day using their computer at home and doing very little work. I did some further research on their programs on various online forums to see if what I was told was true, and you know what? People were very pleased and highly recommended these products, They told me they were making good money REGULARLY!

It was wonderful to find out that after all my research I actually had some real products that I could in good conscience recommend to people who want the freedom that a real online business can provide. Just think if you were to go online and search at google for "web hosting". You will get around 265,000,000 results returned back to you and if your like me you just don't have that much time to search. Lets say out of these results that even 1/10000th or 26,500 are actually webhosting companies(probably far more). Do you think even if you were to review them all that you could make a clear decision? I don't think you could but what would help you make a decision is an attraction developed to some of the sites you've visited. This attraction was probably created by the brand and website design which left an image in your mind. This is another form of marketing that allows a company to stay in your mind even after you leave their site. This is the secret on how you can be seen on top of that huge mountain of companies!

Now that you figured out the secret you have to take the steps to using it to gain the edge on your competition and trust me you can. Face it. Whether you have an ezine or newsletter, or you are working an mlm or affiliate program... You need to capture your prospects email address on your website.

One effective way that I have found in doing this is by using an alert box. When a visitor happens on to your site a box will pop up with a text message and an option(s) for your prospects. They can then choose to accept or cancel.

Some people may find alert boxes annoying but from an internet marketing stand point it is a dream come true! I have more than doubled my subscriptions just by using an alert box on my sites.

The key is to offer something for free and of value to your prospect in the alert box to capture their email address.

Here is a simple script (put it between your head tags) that I use on one of my websites that has more than doubled my opt in subscribers:

In this script above you will put your text message in between the quotes of what you want your alert box to say.

The user will then have two options: to press ok or cancel. If they press "cancel" then nothing happens and they stay on the same page.

If they press "OK" they are then redirected to my sign up page where I can capture their email address. So in this script put the link where you want the person redirected to when they press "OK" in between the quotes, which should be your sign up page.

That's it! I copied and pasted one simple code on my site and more than doubled my opt in subscribers.

There are many different ways to use an alert box. The code I gave you above is a simple one. You can visit your favorite search engine and type "alert box scripts" to find a variety of alert box scripts and their functions.

Researching home based business opportunities on the internet?

Fasten your safety belt and stock up on the Dramamine—better yet get a helmet and a NASCAR crash suit too, because it’s a wild ride and you’re likely to spin out or hit the wall more than once. In the world of Too Good to be True, online moneymaking opportunities have got to be the big dog on the street these days. “Bigger than television advertising?”, you ask. In a sense, yes, because online you are more pro-actively and interactively engaged in seeking solutions. Yeah, the couch potato with his remote finally dons cape and tights and heads for cyberspace seeking truth, justice and the American Way!!.

I started off opting into a couple multilevel marketing opportunities, you know, vitamins and that sort of stuff. This wasn’t totally foreign to me, having been involved (unsuccessfully) with MLM a number of years ago. Like many people, I’m interested in ways to supplement my diet and maintain good health. The added element of earning extra income is also appealing — and why wouldn’t it be? However, discovering that most of your family and friends, “warm market”, just don’t share your excitement, the business aspect ends up in a carton downstairs, under the Christmas decorations.

The idea of marketing on the internet is what drew (sucked?) me back into another attempt at MLM or “network marketing”, as some now prefer calling it. The industry was ready for me too, with team replicated websites, backoffices, promo materials for order, e-mail autoresponders, online conference rooms, you name it. And all I had to do was “simply send people to my website...” and everything would roll along from there. Sounded good to me. So, after setting up everything, including getting a healthy supply of nutritional supplements AND an autoship account for monthly re-stocks, I once again found myself facing my warm market-- only this time it was, “Hey, check out my cool website!”, followed by, “hmm…who else is gonna check out my website?” Well, my spiffy back office also included a link to a source for pre-qualified sales leads which I could purchase in bulk, at quantity pricing of a mere few bucks per lead. I should expect to get 10 interested prospect “sign-ups”out of every 100 leads—after all, “Remember, it’s a numbers game Sparky”.

My team training also heavily promoted meeting people everyday and having weekly meetings in my home, where everyone would watch a DVD introducing our revolutionary new product and compensation plan. Now, I happen to live in a rural area with a very wired Chihuahua (actually it’s my wife’s). Yeah, I know, that’s my problem, so what? But as you may well imagine, I wasn’t terribly excited about roaming the neighboring towns, dropping cards and inviting people to my humble “out in the boonies” abode for a special DVD presentation, including additional background soundtrack provided by “Pancho Psycho”, barricaded in the bedroom, shredding up the carpet.


That’s when I decided to go back online and surf my way to the answers—in cape and tights, of course. The number of “How to” websites, capture pages and sales letters on the web, dealing with making money online is simply mind boggling. It becomes Kryptonite after awhile. I went through such a mind numbing number of sites, it nearly put me in a carton downstairs under the Christmas decorations-- OR to quote Chris Farley as my favorite motivational speaker, Matt Foley, “…IN A VAN, DOWN BY THE RIVER!!!”. But interestingly enough, after awhile, one also realizes there isn’t actually a lot of different information out there; just a lot of different people duplicating similar stuff in very similar formats, often with just enough variation to make it “their stuff”-- and mostly dealing with how to sell an information product which reveals how to sell an information product, etc., ad infinitum. Not exactly a unique new thing here. It gets kinda like Rap music or fast food chains after awhile. I was getting supersized, yet still starved for real nutrition.

Another key that I (Mr. Thick and Naпve) finally figured out, is that it’s all about getting traffic, driving traffic and acquiring a prospect base you can continue to market to. That’s extremely important to know, because I don’t know how many times I read “… all ya gotta do is ‘simply’ send people to the website… and (this or that system) will take it from there”. That “simple” part was always hanging me up. What was so simple about it? That seemed to be the big secret in the world of, “Earn six figures weekly working 20 minutes a day…” or is it “20 minutes a week”? I forget.

Are "paid-autosurf" or "paid-to-surf" programs, the most popular being 12DailyPro and StudioTraffic, a scam? Some people would say they are. Some would disapprove even the use or those derogatory terms. Some don't even care as long as they make money.

However, to fully understand and separate the truth from mere propaganda, we need to analyze the terms themselves, and see if it applies. Here's a definition from Credit Research Foundation (www. crfonline. org) of "ponzi schemes" or "pyramid schemes" :

"When the organizers of the scheme use the assets of new investors to make profit payments to the old investors. The scheme typically has no other source of revenue other than from the new investors. Ponzi schemes, often called pyramid schemes, progress geometrically until they reach the point that the operators cannot find enough recruits (victims) to continue the payout."

Most paid auto surf programs are not based on a multi-level marketing system, which means that they do not rely on new recruits to sustain their modus operandi or business operations. In fact, as a member of most auto-surf programs, recruiting new members is not even required. Even when they do have referral programs, it’s usually single-level or single-tier, avoiding the complications that are part and parcel of MLM programs.

The programs owners are quick to point out that autosurfs are not investment opportunities either. You simply get paid to view ads on the Internet, even if those ads can be displayed automatically without your constant attention. The programs owners relate their method of advertising as "similar to television ads".

So what's all the fuss about then?

It's simple: every new business model, especially when proven to work, will face public criticism and negative opinions from nay-sayers who don't understand why it doesn't fit their description of a traditional business. Often times these nay-sayers are not experts themselves, but rather succumb to their fear due to lack of understanding.

People fear what they don't understand, and the same scenario can be traced back in history when AMWAY has to fight public prosecution to prove the legitimacy of their business model. In time, when the storm has passed, some of these programs will proven their worthiness, and some will fold under the scrutiny and public pressure. Only the true opportunities will remain, and this could be a good thing for everyone.
