Using math games to enhance learning

: Ever wonder how you could get your son or daughter to be more interested in math? Math is hard work, but with some fun maths games, you can capture their attention while they learn. So, how can you find some fun maths games? They are actually not very hard to find. If you look up math games on Amazon. com, for instance, many books will come up that have math games. Or, you can look up math game on the internet for free, and find many free resources for math games. There are online games, or games that you can read about and play at home with your child.
So, what is the best way to incorporate them into your child's study schedule? It is best to cover the basics first, but let him know that the game awaits him if he masters the subject. Positive reinforcement is a proven technique for children. By saving the fun maths games for the end, you'll not only grab your child's attention for learning math, but you'll give him a reward that he'll enjoy and benefit from.
Here is an example of a challenging, but fun game. Jot down on a piece of paper the number 1-20. The game is then to, using the same number no more than 5 times and using any standard mathematical function, try to have that written number as the result. For example, if trying to get the number 1 with 5, 7's, one may come up with1 = (7 7)/7 7/7. For 2, you may come up with (7 7)*7/7/7 = 2. Pretty simple at first, but it gets challenging later on. This and other fun maths games can be used to challenge children to use math in new and creative ways.
There are other fun maths games that can help a child expand his mind or your mind. For example, a popular game called Sudoku is being played by many adults these days. The game is easy enough for kids, but can be challenging enough for adults to enjoy. Try, and you'll be hooked!

Preparing for standardized tests

: SAT, ACT, GRE… and the list goes on. Standardized tests are hard. Why? Because most people don't know how to study for them. In this short article, you will learn some tips on studying for preparing for standardized tests. Some people say or believe that you can't study for the SAT's or ACT's, or similar tests, but you can.
The hardest part about standardized tests is knowing what to study for. In a math or science class, you always know exactly what will be on the test. But that isn't exactly true for standardized tests. That is because standardized tests don't really want to test your knowledge; they assess your skills at reading and solving problems. Some sort of reading portion is on almost every standardized test. So, can you prepare for that? Certainly. Magazines and newspapers are great ways to prepare for those sorts of tests. Practice for the reading portion by reading short newspaper and magazine articles. Allow yourself no more than about 2 minutes for a 1 page article, and underline or mark the most important ideas. Don't worry about memorizing the article or remembering every detail; just concentrate on the main ideas. That is the basic skill that is needed to crack reading portions of standardized tests.
Math and science tests are difficult as well. There are many topics that test makers can pull material from. So, like the reading portion, do what you can, but don't sweat all the details. For math, practice lots of problems. Most booksellers carry test preparation materials, from which you can find example problems. Buy a book that corresponds to your tests and practice: take a test and check your answers. By tackling those questions, you can see where your problem areas are. If you find that you have a particular weakness in an area or just need to brush up on a topic you haven't practiced in a while, you'll be more efficient in studying. Continue taking practice tests, though, so you can review your stronger topics as well.
Many people ask if there are strategies for standardized tests. One strategy is to make educated guesses whenever possible. Often times, you will get to a question on the test that just doesn't make too much sense to you. Do you best to eliminate one or more answer choices before guessing. How to eliminate answer choices varies from test to test, but with practice, you can find a strategy that works best for the test and section you're working on. For instance, if working on antonyms or analogies on an English section, eliminate choices that can't possibly be the correct choice. If you have an idea of a word but don't know its exact meaning, you can usually eliminate at least 1 answer choice. If most of the answer choices have roughly the same meaning but one means the opposite, that choice could be the correct answer. Another strategy is to hold off on hard questions until the end. Since, usually, all questions are worth the same amount of points, its better to do the easy ones first when you're not pressured for time. It would be a shame to miss out on easy questions because you took too much time on harder ones that you'll probably get wrong anyway! These are two basic strategies for getting better scores on standardized tests. As you practice more, you will find out what works best for you.
In addition to practicing, it is important to practice the correct way. It is best to practice under quiet, uninterrupted situations. Don't take a break every 10 minutes to get something to eat or drink. You need to condition yourself to sit still for long periods of time. Your brain needs to be accustomed to concentrating without any disruptions. That is the only way you can get used to the length of the test. Also, and this was mentioned before, time yourself on the tests, that way you will get used to the speed at which you must work to finish sections of the test. If you can finish the test without leaving any questions unread, you'll be in a great position to get the best score you're capable of.
So, those are some basic preparation strategies. Also as important to studying is getting rest and exercise. Exercising is a great way to relieve stress and help your brain remember things. And, the days before the actual test, make sure to get plenty of rest. If you follow these strategies, you'll do great!

Monday the day

The day of Monday is either considered the first or second day of the week. It comes after Sunday and before Tuesday. The name "Monday" comes from Mani, who is the Germanic Moon god. Monday is often considered to be the first day of the week. It is considered as this in most of Europe, Australia, parts of Africa, and South America. ISO 8601, the international standard, also defines Monday as the first day of the week. The traditional view held by Canada and the United States, have Monday as the second day of the week.

In modern culture Monday is usually looks at being the beginning of a work week. This is because it is usually on Monday when adults go back to work and children go back to school after a "weekend" (Saturday & Sunday)

In America Monday is never viewed as being a good day, as it means going back to the daily grind of another work week. A typical work week in North America is 40 hours long. That 40 hours is eight hours over five days, with normal office hours being between 9am-5pm. Because of this image as being the worst day of the week Monday's are often made the enemies of several jokes, and comments. An example of this is Garfield, a comic strip cat, who constantly is at war with Monday. Alot of companies try to cash in on this image, and give people something to look forward to on Monday's. Who has heard of "Monday Night Football", or "Monday Club"?

Monday is home to several important dates throughout past and present history. Dates such as Easter Monday (hard to get that one wrong), and Black Monday, Blue Monday, Easter Monday, First Monday, Handsel Monday, Manic Monday, Miracle Monday, Plough Monday, Wet Monday, Whit Monday.

Washington d. c. school district takes aim at language and cultural education

Washington D. C.’s Language Access Act

In 2004, the Washington D. C. enacted the Language Access Act. The Act was created in order to grant greater access to and participation in public schools and other public services for those residents that have limited or no English proficiency. The Act is designed to address four crucial areas of language use and access to public services. These four areas are: the need for and the offering of oral language services; providing of written translation of key documents into other languages that have populations constitutes 3% or 500 individuals, whichever is less, of the population served or encountered, or likely to be served or encountered; establishment of language access plans that best services these populations; and finally creating language access coordination. The District of Columbia is focusing at this time on these five languages; Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, and Amharic. As a public service the Washington D. C. School District has also made steps to provide adjustments in its language and cultural education programs.

Washington D. C. School’s Diverse Population

Washington D. C. Schools are composed of one hundred sixty-seven schools and special learning centers. The breakdown of Washington D. C. Schools includes: one hundred one elementary schools, eleven middle schools, nine junior high schools, twenty high schools, six educational centers and twenty specialty schools. These schools educate nearly sixty-six thousand students with the majority made up of 39,161 elementary school students. Washington D. C. Schools have a rich diverse student population with more than one hundred twelve different foreign languages that represent one hundred thirty-eight different nationalities. Out of these students almost 13% can be said to belong to a language minority group and another 8% can be classified as Limited English Proficient (LEP) or Non English Proficient (LEP/NEP) learners. The ethnic breakdown of the Washington D. C. School District includes nearly 85% African Americans, 10% Hispanics, 4% Whites, around 1% Asian Americans. In an effort to address the needs of this student population Washington D. C. Schools center their attention on the younger learners. Washington D. C. Schools operates sixty-nine Head Start programs aimed at pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students. It also runs six Montessori programs. It is now aiming at improving its language programs. Presently, Washington D. C. Schools operate eight two-way full immersion Spanish/English.

Implementing New Two-Way Language Immersion Programs

The Shepherd Elementary School, one Washington D. C. School, is working to develop new two-way language immersion programs for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten. The school is seeking to enroll pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students who speak French, Spanish or other languages in an effort to create new immersion programs. The programs will begin in late August, so Washington D. C. Schools are asking for immediate responses for those parents interested in the program. Right now the plan is for students to receive either Spanish-English or French-English content taught by fluent English and target language teachers. The dual language program is connected to the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program that begins in all grades in late August, 2006. As part of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program students also receive education in culture and cultural diversity which includes: Children develop an understanding of self within a community. Begin to identify similarities and differences among people (e. g., gender, race, culture, language, abilities); demonstrate an emerging respect for culture and ethnicity. (Will learn some words of another language. Tastes a snack that a classmate from another culture brings to school.); and demonstrate emerging awareness and respect for abilities. (Listens to a story about a child with a disability. Includes children with disabilities in play.)

Affordable online degrees and the impact of modern society

Time is one of the many reasons adults have for not going back to school. Most are already in the work force or have families. Some are stay at home parents with responsibilities at home that do not leave a lot of time for school. Another reason for not going back to school is budgetary concerns. These same adults who work or stay at home with the children often have tight budgets. The idea of having to pay exorbitant amounts of money to further their education may seem daunting. Affordable online degrees are available, though.

Over the last several years, there has been a rapidly growing segment of the population that desired to go back to school. This will help educate them and allow for potential career advancement. Schools have started recognizing this and also recognizing that adults wanting to go back to school have some unique issues that are not generally present in students just out of high school. Colleges and universities have started designing programs to accommodate these needs, allowing adults to return to school with greater ease. Having affordable online degrees available is one way schools are working with adults to help them finish their degree.

Affordable online degrees are possible because of the lower cost per student. There is no need for a lower student to teacher ratio and the work is done predominantly online so there is no need for classroom space. This decreases the cost to the school and that savings is passed on to the student. In addition, as with traditional schools, financial aid in the form of loans and grants are available.

Grants are amounts of money to be used for education that do not have to be paid back. There are certain criteria that need to be met before you can be eligible. However, there are several programs available and you may be eligible for one which will give you some, if not all, the tuition for the affordable online degrees you may need. Loans will need to be paid back usually starting after completion of the degree. However, with a degree you have the opportunity to increase your salary and will at that time be able to afford to pay off the loans.

When looking for affordable online degrees, be aware that there are scams on the Internet. You want to avoid these. These sites claim you can get a degree in a very short time with minimal work. These are not legitimate degrees from accredited universities and should be avoided. Using them can cause serious legal issues including criminal charges or civil suits. Earning a degree takes time and effort, so be sure you get the satisfaction of earning the degree and learning the coursework, not just purchasing a worthless piece of paper.

With the increasing popularity of affordable online degrees, many adults are choosing to go back to school to further their education. Having a degree will open up many more opportunities. It will allow you to get into a field in which you are interested or assist you in advancing on the career path you’ve already chosen.

Atkins funds teachers union

The National Education Association, the nation's largest teachers union, has said "yes" to moulah made on diets that say "no" to many fruits and vegetables.

Atkins announced that it was joining forces with the National Education Association to educate children about nutrition, in part by sponsoring a school health Web site.

Or, as Greg Toppo put it so well in his USA Today account of the deal: "The folks who brought back three-egg omelets and triple cheeseburgers want to teach your kids a thing or two about health, nutrition and exercise."

When more than half of kids go without fruit on any given day, and childhood obesity has made this generation the first with a shorter life expectancy than their parents, what kids should be learning is that a diet low in saturated and trans fats and rich in fruits and vegetables is the foundation for preventing disease and maintaining a healthy weight.

Instead, they'll receive a "nutrition" message bankrolled by dollars earned selling a high-fat, low-fruit diet. Atkins claims it only wants to provide the NEA with "the latest research and information available on controlled-carbohydrate nutrition."

Really? Do you suppose that will include the research just published in The Lancet regarding the battery of negative side-effects - headaches, muscle fatigue, foul breath, constipation - suffered by Atkins dieters? What about the recent MIT research that suggests that low-carb dieting can cause serotonin levels to plummet? Or the Mayo Clinic survey linking a marked increase in saturated fat intake over the past five years with the Atkins craze? I don't think so.

If the Atkins folks thought that using educators to carry their low-carb message would be easy, then they were in for a rude awakening. The Partnership for Essential Nutrition - a coalition of consumer, nutrition and public health groups - has launched a letter-writing campaign to demand the immediate cancellation of the NEA-Atkins deal. The partnership warned that "there are very real dangers to children if they were to adopt a low-carb diet because the brain requires 130 grams of glucose a day for normal functioning, a quantity of carbohydrates that even the maintenance level of the Atkins diet does not deliver."

Sad to say, the NEA gets a big fat "F" when it comes to taking a responsible stand on children's nutritional needs, though we'll give 'em a bright red "A" for Atkins when it comes to irresponsibly taking money made on diets that disregard such needs.

But maybe the unions aren't so much irresponsible as indifferent. As Albert Shanker, the late, great crusader for teachers' labor rights once observed: "I'll start representing kids when kids start paying union dues." Which raises the question once again: Just whose interests is the NEA representing?

Is an online bachelor degree for you

It used to be the case that if you wanted to obtain a bachelor's degree without physically being present at the institution providing the course, you needed to undertake a distant learning course. In most cases, those who graduated with a bachelor's degree obtained from a distant learning course were afforded less respect for their achievements than those who completed their studies on-site.

The advent of the Internet, however, has completely changed the sphere of distance learning. Today distance learning is a huge industry, worth billions of dollar a year, and you can achieve an online bachelor degree at almost any institution of learning in the world.

So, how do you go about deciding which online bachelor degree program to study? To help you, here are 3 questions to ask yourself before embarking on your quest:

1. What do I really want to learn?

The traditional learning process was to select a number of courses you might want to study and then to apply to the universities respectively - places not guaranteed though. However, with the availability of online programs, this process is no longer as important.

In this regard, today's online bachelor degree programs can take an almost unlimited number of students - so choosing the right course to take becomes far more important, and much less of a gamble!

2. Where do I want to learn?

Historically, deciding where you wanted to learn was of importance because that meant you would have to go there and live: at least during the time you undertook the course. In most cases this would mean having to leave family and childhood friends, or choosing to study in the area you grew up in.

One of the benefit of an online degree program is that this no longer becomes an important factor. As it goes without staying that by studying an online bachelor degree, you can be physically located anywhere whilst studying somewhere else! Researching the institution you want to study at, and the courses they provide, therefore becomes very important.

3. Am I disciplined enough?

This last question is probably going to be one of the most important you'll need to honestly ask yourself. You see, with on-campus education you have teachers to chase you if you are falling behind schedule. However, with an online bachelor degree program, your study period and method is much more in your own-hands.

Thus, finding the time to study, and being disciplined enough to sit-down and study during this period, is vital if you want to succeed. Otherwise, learning in the more traditional methods may be more beneficial to you.

Learning spanish - part 5 - using text books to their full potential

In my last article I talked about two different approaches to learning Spanish; ‘parrot fashion’ or by studying Spanish grammar. In this article I want to talk a little about what I learnt from a basic level Spanish text book in 6 weeks before I embarked on a long trip to Central and South America.

Having hindsight is a wonderful thing! It isn’t until now, after spending a number of years really getting to grips with the Spanish language that I can appreciate how learning Spanish might be best achieved. Certainly being aware of your limitations, what you hope to achieve and when you hope to achieve it and being mentally prepared for the ups and downs of the entire experience are certainly worth considering before you get started.

I said before that a good way to get started is to start learning new Spanish words and phrases without worrying too much about Spanish grammar. Well this is true but if you’re serious about learning Spanish then you will eventually have to start studying Spanish grammar.

The text book I used in order to obtain a basic level understanding of Spanish grammar was called ‘Pasos’. I am not necessarily advocating this book over any other as I have seen several other text books that adopt similar approaches to the same teachings. The book didn’t just dive into talking about Spanish grammar right from the beginning either. It eased me into it after a couple of chapters or so. The first couple of chapters taught me some basic greetings and how to introduce myself without getting too technical!

I was learning new words and phrases without necessarily understanding why certain words or sentences were constructed in the way that they were. One of the biggest problems I encountered at the beginning was trying to absorb and remember all the new material I was learning. One reason for this was because I didn’t have the luxury of time and I was trying to take a lot of things in over a short period of time.

An important part of the learning process is finding a way that best allows you to absorb information without becoming board or loosing concentration. The text book I was using gave me time to reflect on each area of study by engaging me in different activities. The activities included multiple choice quizzes, and various word association exercises. A student is far more likely to remain enthused about studying if they can learn via a variety of different types of exercises and quizzes.

Of course quizzes and exercises are not used in the learning process just to keep the student enthused. They are also used to test whether a student has remembered what they have been taught or whether they have correctly understood, and assimilated what the intension of the lesson was. In one respect they give the student the chance to see if they have remembered new Spanish words or phrases for example.

In later chapters in my Spanish text book the exercises and quizzes were more focused on making sure that I could apply the things I was learning to different situations. Often this would involve seeing if I could formulate sentences using correct verb formations. The formation of Spanish verbs is something that I intend to write more about in my next article.

Another very important method of learning that my text book allowed me to engage in was through listening. The book was accompanied by several CD’s. Each CD contained different listening exercises that related to each area of study. These exercises not only made the entire learning experience more varied and therefore more enjoyable but were also vital in making sure I was exposed to the language in a way that was as natural as it could be.

It is important to remember that if you are serious about learning Spanish then you not only want to be able to speak it but you want to be able to speak it so that native Spanish speaking people will understand you. This means you have to work on your pronunciation right from the very beginning. You don’t want to practice saying things in Spanish over and over again if you are pronouncing badly. This will only instil bad habits that will become more difficult to shake of later on.

It is also important to remember that you want to be able to read and understand the Spanish language, not just be able to speak it. This is another reason how attempting a variety of different exercise will benefit you. Don’t just focus on being able to speak well. You will be surprised to find out how difficult it can be to write in Spanish if all you have done is learn how to communicate verbally.

When I first started working through my first Spanish text book I have to admit that I skipped things and I didn’t attempt all the different exercise that were provided. As I said before this was in part due to time constraints, but looking back I can now see how important they all were. If you choose to start your learning experience by working through a Spanish text book like I did or even if you are using this method as part of a bigger strategy my advice would be not to rush things and to make sure you make the most of everything the book is trying to offer you.

In my next article I intend to talk about the sections of my Spanish text book that were more focused on Spanish grammar, in particular on how different verb tense are formed.

Game contest teach children practical life skills

In school, children learn about history, science and the three R's. What they might not learn, however, are practical skills to get them through life's ups and downs.

Most people learn how to deal with conflicts, face their fears, overcome challenges and solve problems by trial and error. Thus, parents might be at a loss as to how to effectively teach their children these types of skills.

"In my psychiatric practice, I've realized that children face many challenges and complex choices in their communities, schools and, yes, in the streets," said Dr. Michael Rayel, co-founder of Oikos Global, the maker of an "emotional intelligence" board game called Oikos Game. "These challenges - pressure from peers, bullies in the neighborhood, strangers with bad intentions, dangerous street drugs - are difficult to resolve. Learning how to handle these tough issues requires more than just random advice and trial and error."

Oikos Game, which the entire family can play, aims to teach children personal development and emotional skills. Through active play, children learn positive strategies for handling common situations relating to anger, aggression, fear and conflict. Players also learn how to show empathy, be assertive, solve problems and deal with strangers.

In addition, Oikos Global sponsors an annual international competition called the Oikos Global Award, which recognizes and rewards young people who help their peers face challenges in their communities and schools.

Contestants must show that they've been effective at accomplishing any of the following goals: reducing violence or bullying in their schools or communities; preventing the use of alcohol, cigarettes and drugs among peers; improving communication among peers; establishing a support network; raising mental health awareness; or otherwise improving the emotional health and well-being of peers.

The first-place winner is awarded $1,000. Second - and third-place winners receive $750 and $500, respectively. Each winner is awarded a certificate and a medal.

E-learning effective employee training

Training is essential to any employee and provides not only a benefit to them but also to the company in increased productivity and employee job satisfaction. The high costs of travel combined with increasing strained budgets have meant that training can sometimes be the first thing to be cut when focusing on the bottom line. Companies are turning to a more cost-effective solution through online education and e-learning.

Training an employee is essential for any business, whether it be a fast food establishment or a multi-million dollar software company. One of the most effective ways to train employees is to let them get education at their own pace through e-learning training programs. Not only does this eliminate costly travel expenses but it also allows the employee to take the training on their own schedule as they are available. If an employee cannot finish the online education is one sitting they can easily come back to where they left off next time. Furthermore, if there is a question or a concept the employee does not understand the e-learning system lets them review and go over materials as often as they desire.

One of the foremost designers of e-learning software is Gary Blum Designs. They have developed online education systems for a number of major companies including Charles Schwab, Cygent and Sybase. If your company does not have an internal training department then hiring an outside contractor such as Gary Blum Designs can be the best solution for getting quality e-learning materials delivered right to your employees.

Most online education includes quiz and performance evaluation software at the end of the course. This information can be stored for use by management to see training weak-spots in the company or judge individual performance. Many times employees can re-take missed quizzes or evaluations and never be asked the same question twice thanks to the technology behind the e-learning application.

How gambling horoscopes help you win

Many people believe that by using astrology you can tell your future, and maybe it can not, but by following the advice given in Horoscopes many people find great luck, so how else can it be explained.

This phenomenon can be explained by the fact that if you believe it is true that you will have good luck on a certain day you probably will.

This does not mean that the prediction was right, but if you believe good things are going to happen to you at work, in your personal life or in a casino, you will give off a positive energy that attracts other positive energies and this will help good things happen.

Some people do not believe this theory either. They feel that if you believe good things are going to happen and they do it is because you were in a better mood and making better decisions which will bring about better results.

No one can tell how exactly gambling horoscopes help a person win in a casino, but the fact remains that they do help people win all the time.

Studies have been done to try to show exactly how horoscopes work, but no one has ever been able to come up with an explanation that seems believable. All they have been able to show is that the more you believe the better and more accurate the predictions will be.

This may be because if you really believe in the accuracy of the gambling Horoscope you will find things that you rationalize to make fit into the horoscopes prediction.

No one has ever been able to find any reason any form of prognosticating works, but people do believe in it and it is that belief in it that seems to make the things come true.

Studies have been done in the past and have proven beyond doubt that a person who has a more positive outlook will tend to have better luck and will generally be a happier person; where as a person with a negative outlook will constantly have negative events take place around them.

The only explanation scientists have ever given for this is to say that the average human only uses 10% of the brain and that the explanation for these events is hidden in the 90% of the brain we do not use, and that maybe if and when we learn the secrete for unlocking these areas of the brain we will then be able to get a better understanding of how all types of psychic predictions work.

But until then all I can tell you is that if you believe that the prediction will come true then it will come true.

By reading your horoscope and waiting until it says you will have a good day, then going to the casino to do some gambling you will greatly increase your chances of having a winning day and the more you believe it will happen the more it increases your chances of being successful.

Teacher inservice workshops and professional development courses are what university teacher training should be

Today's teachers are prepared for yesterday's students. The truth is that college and university teacher training has been stuck in the 1950's for the past 50 years. Content and testing have remained the central focus of teacher preparation, while students' behavioral and emotional problems became the central focus of the classroom. In essence, most teacher training programs prepare teachers to work with a student who no longer exists. Contemporary teacher training gives today's teachers yesterday's tools, leaving even the most talented educator sometimes feeling ill-prepared to cope with students of the 2000s who have moved far beyond a time of bobby sox and poodle skirts to cyber sex and nipple rings.

While it is unlikely that teacher college and university training programs will change dramatically any time soon, there is no harm in speculating about what the curriculum should look like now. Subjects that are currently covered only in teacher inservice workshops, professional development seminars and education conferences, should be routinely included as a major focus of professional training for educators. When this type of practical training is left to be an optional add-on that must be sought out, located, and often paid for with a teacher's own personal funds, it becomes far less likely that most teachers will ever update their skills. I know this is true because many participants of my popular Problem Student Problem-Solver Workshops (http://www. youthchg. com) tell me that they have to pay for their own training, beg for days off so they can attend, and sometimes even use vacation time or forfeit their pay when their school can't or won't fund the costs.

Putting aside those concerns for the moment, in an ideal world, what might teacher training programs cover beyond content and testing? Here are the top 5 critical things that teachers are never taught but may really need right

1. Give Teachers Basic Juvenile Mental Health Training

More and more students have serious mental health concerns yet most teachers don't know a conduct disorder from an attachment disorder. That's like not knowing the difference between arithmetic and spelling. When teachers don't know basic mental health information, it creates the perfect conditions for safety concerns to simmer and boil throughout the school and in the classroom.

2. Offer Teachers Real-World Violence and Safety Training

Schools are more out of control than ever before. School shootings, gangs and bullies can pose enormous potential safety concerns yet few teacher training programs devote extensive course work to practical, preventative methods. Using character education-- the current violence prevention method of choice today-- to stem this type of violence is naive and ineffective. While character ed can work well with many students, it will always fail with some youngsters. With some populations, such as conduct disorders (who are an estimated 11-14% of students), empathy-based approaches like character ed will actually make the situation far worse. It is an approach better suited for Archie and Jughead, not the South Park kids.

3. Show Teachers How to Teach School Skills

Years ago, families reliably taught their offspring to show respect, arrive on time, dress appropriately, and to have an appreciation for the importance of school. Now, many families cannot or will not instill those beliefs and teach those skills. If families do not teach kids how to be students, then schools must perform this function. Until then, teachers are working with untrained, unmotivated students. Teachers need to be taught how to systematically train youngsters on all aspects of school functioning from punctuality to homework management, from how to raise their hands to how often to talk in class, and so on. Motivation should be given special attention, but typical contemporary teacher training includes almost no practical focus on that today.

4. Show Teachers How to Teach Coping Skills

Because families are more likely today than years ago to be fractured, abusive, troubled and otherwise impaired, teachers need to know how to manage the problems that result when family problems come to school with students. A special focus should be given to what methods work with school refusers, withdrawn kids, work refusers, depressed students, traumatized children, and students in crisis.

5. Show Teachers How to Teach Social Skills

If a student can't sit in a chair, talk one at a time, or keep his hands to himself, it makes it almost impossible to teach that child academic content. Yet today's teachers see dozens of socially maladjusted students each day. If parents cannot or will not train their offspring to have basic social skills, teachers must pick up the slack. A child who can sit in his chair, talk one at a time, and keep his hands to himself, is far more likely to be a teachable student. There are no shortcuts around the serious social skill deficiencies that educators cope with today. Until Susie can acquire at least minimal social skills, educating her may be impossible.

It is way past time to drag teacher training into the new millennium. If you are a teacher struggling to make sense out of your troubled, challenging students, the problem isn't you. The problem is that your professional training fits students who walked your corridors a whopping half century ago. If you want to learn the practical, updated, more effective methods that they didn't teach you in college, your only option now is to find an inservice course, workshop or professional development seminar that can upgrade your skills to fit contemporary youth.

The importance of special education

Special children should be given a great deal of help. Special education is offered to children to help them live normally and deal with their society. When you are helping an autistic child, there are instances that you may feel a little frustrated or disappointed.

Special education conducted to these children should have continuous, multi faceted and special approach of intensive guidance and care. These autistic children with 60 to 70 IQ rating have better chances of learning compared to children aged 5 to 6 who have spontaneous speech.

Here are some special education guidelines and tips that can help you take good care and provide special attention to autistic children.

1. You have to make your child feel that he is a part of the family. However, it is better if he feels that he is not the center of attention in the family just because he is special or disabled. Like normal children, special children need proper attention to help them when dealing with their environment.

2. You may use behavior modification skills to change those common undesirable behaviors that your child portrays. You may use practically known rewards that he usually likes. In this way, you will be teaching him how he can increase his motivation.

3. It is advisable that you compliment him with good praises. You may provide him ten complimentary statements for every effort of change and corrections.

4. You should always look attentively to his warning signs. Make an effort to observe and study his movements. You may teach him how he can recognize and follow some basic instructions and directions.

5. You should allow your child to observe you as you show him that he is special and should be treated differently. Usually, most autistic children are confused with the changes that are happening in his environment.

6. You should find the best educational institution that can provide him the needed skills and best childcare program. Know your child’s special needs so that you can assess the educational program that you choose. There are early intervention programs that offer special education to autistic and disabled children who are not yet ready to get into schools.

7. You should always be consistent in providing him the needed knowledge and assistance. You may create a special routine that he can easily notice. Special education programs can provide you guidelines and tips things regarding child behavior and mental development.

8. Make sure that you have an organized and well-executed movements and routines. If you are trying other things and you are unsure of the things you are teaching him, he may be confused and will tend to lose focus.

9. Special education programs suggest that you use the same set of words or statements every time your child is praised or corrected. Many autistic children do not easily learn well from experiences. They just follow an organized routine that they see and hear from the people attending to them.

Finding a support group in your community is one good way in motivating your child and the whole family. You may join a parent groups that have the same case of having autistic children. Most importantly, love is the most important factor that will help your child learn and cope with his environment.

Importance of history in our life

When the working day is over and you have spare time to sit in the living room in front of the TV with a cup of hot chocolate, we think about the events that happen during the day and the things that we didn’t manage to do. We may regret or file genuine happiness and satisfaction, but everything we do is in the past, its history. Nobody will reject the fact that history is one of the most important out of the other disciplines. To know other subjects we are supposed to learn history and use it to our profit and prosperity. History gives us the “today”, by which we mean all the things we use to make our lives easier and more comfortable. History is not only a college book or an article or a news paper published three hundred years ago, it is every single thing that we’ve experienced, our own history, united with others. The beginning of the history comes not only from the first record of human existence but from the first trace, a footprint of a first creature with abstract thinking.

We pose ourselves with questions daily. Where do we come from? What are we destined to do? What are me and the surrounding? These questions may sound very philosophical and practically useless, but still sometimes we lye sleepless in bed thinking about what awaits you next day. If to take a closer look at the events that we consider history, we may find these answers easily. There is a hypothesis about things running in the circle. Old things return to change something new. Here we even can apply a proverb “Something new is fairly forgotten old”. I think it is also the reason for us to learn history and to predict, or at least try, the future and your role in it. When do people usually start to learn history? Not out of the first history book of course. The learning process starts when you hear the world famous “once upon a time” from your granny or father. This is the history of your family, you are to know perfectly well and understand the importance of knowing it.

At school and at the university you learn history, weather you like it or not. Some of us become excited and read piles and piles of history books and usually get best results in writing history essays. Some consider this to be nonsense, used only to waist our time. But what is the way your outlook and your ideology were formed? According to the common sense, out of history. It is the biggest treasure of ours and we have to value it. We take lessons from famous scientists and technicians that lived even hundreds of years before our grandparents were born. Their lives are like a history essay, short revision of a nice old story. We use their experience and their inventions daily, even every hour. It is very important for us to show respect to those who left us priceless works that we enjoy every day, watching plays in theatres and reading books. We don’t want to be ungrateful for we are also to leave a trace in history. What kind of trace, will depend on our attitude towards what we do and the knowledge of history, the inheritage we are to pass to our posterities.

Getting help with your term papers

Sometimes, assignments such as term papers can be overwhelming, especially if a student doesn’t know what the project includes. A term or research paper is a form of academic writing that entails a more abstract, critical and thoughtful level of inquiry that is beyond the usual writing that you may be used to. Although writing a term paper may seem to be a daunting task especially if it’s your first time to write one. There are various term papers writing tutorials online that are available for free complete with discussions and lectures at the college level and of course let us not forget the famous saying that states that “practice makes perfect”-this means simply that the more you write the better you will become in writing term papers.

There are various steps involved in writing terms papers and these are as follows:

• You need to familiarize yourself with the works of the professionals or the subject or topic of your term paper. Research online or better yet interview personally various authorities on the subject or topic that you are going to write about. Build your subject based from the information that you have gathered.

• Compare their ideas with yours regarding your topic for the term paper.

All of your gathered information will comprise the supporting facts for your topic or your subject. You need to outline all the relevant information you have gathered including your own ideas on your topic. This may come as a surprise to you but you will soon find out that most of your professors are more interested in applying your own ideas in providing academic context and credibility to what you want to prove.

This is because your professors already know what the experts are saying regarding the topic since there are already hundreds of books written about the subject and all conclusions are just the same. But your conclusion and views on your subject matter are fresh ideas that have not been documented or published into a book.

Now that you know that a term paper is more of a presentation of your own ideas backed up with information from some of the experts in the topic you have chosen, it’s now going to be easy for you writing your term paper. You have two styles to choose from on how you want to present your ideas in the term paper and these are either analytical or argumentative.

The analytical way of writing your term paper makes use of evidence to analyze the different facets of an issue. On the other hand, the argumentative way of writing term papers employs the use of evidence in order to attempt to convince the reader to agree on your particular stand on the presented debatable topic. Moreover, in creating an argumentative term paper, the very main focus is given to your insights since this serves as the center on which an argumentative paper balances rather than just interspersed or tacked on the end of analytical papers. It is also the most popularly used style in writing term papers. Whatever strategy or style you choose to present your idea it will create a great impact on how your term paper will be graded or accepted for its relevance.

Video poker why do people like it

: Yesterday, I was having a pint at my local bar when I noticed a small guy in a dark suit. Sitting to the far-right corner of the bar and away from all of us, this short man was crouched over a glowing video poker screen. Huh? It was just a few months back that casinos all over the world and especially in Las Vegas were removing poker, baccarat and blackjack tables and adding more and more slot machines instead. But then something peculiar took place. Casino owners and employees noticed that one corner of the machines was more crowded than the rest. A short examination revealed that the games allocated to the slot section was none other than video poker. So why are so many interested players preferring video poker? Here, I will try and answer some of the more practical reasons why this has happened and will happen even more and more: 1) The Odds: While slot machines offer odds that are pretty difficult to win on (and by that I mean the real big bucks), video poker machines are much easier when it comes to accumulating a large sum because it is somewhat based (even though loosely) on poker. This makes each player think that it is based on his skill more than just on luck. 2) More Choice: By this I am not referring to the pick of different slot machines, but rather to the fact that you have the choice of selecting the row to play with it whereas in slots, you have no real control after you press the button or pull the lever. It is not a secret that the principle of both these two games is to try and hit the money jackpot whether it is by getting the appropriate numbers or symbols aligned or whether it is by getting a royal poker flush. To do this in video poker, you have to pick from a number of five-hand cards. 3) Sitting Out: When playing at a slot machine, you have to play each and every time. If you want to stop, you have to clear the machine so that someone else can get a try. But this is not the case when playing video poker. This game allows you to simply sit out a round or two and then continue whenever you feel like. 4) Higher Money Ratio: Because of the chance that you can sit out any round where your cards are not any good. You have a bigger chance making an overall profit out of the time you spent playing at the casino whether it is an online casino or a land one or even whether it is just a small machine in the local diner or bar or regional gas station. 5) It is also said in many video poker circles and plenty of other articles around the web that the statistics of hitting higher paying options while playing video poker are higher in comparison to playing video slot machines. Conclusion: Not withstanding all of the above reasons, the fact that poker is very popular and slot machines too only leads me to assume that a game combining the two will be greatly appreciated by any player of either of the two games but more so by those who enjoy the drone of the machine.

All the disadvantages of being a travel nurse

The Disadvantages of Being a Traveling Nurse

As a traveling nurse you will need to be able to adapt to your surroundings quickly. Since s/he will be traveling to new areas and dealing with different jobs on each assignment the traveling nurse accepts this is one very important draw backs to the job if you are not able to adapt quickly.

Since nursing deals a lot with interaction to patients and your co-workers if you are a shy person then meeting new people constantly may also be a drawback. If you take a long time to build a good working interaction with your co-workers becoming a traveling nurse may be a drawback.

As a traveling nurse you need to be able to adjust to out of the ordinary situations and the unexpected. If you like and are more comfortable in surroundings that you know and are familiar with then a career as a traveling nurse may not be the wise choice for you as you are constantly changing your surroundings. When you travel things can go wrong, no mater how much you have planned no matter how much detail you have put into your plans the unexpected will happen. If you are uncomfortable dealing with problems that can arise during travels then you may want to look into a more contemporary nursing job. If you love the security of home life a traveling nurse moves around a lot and their home is in various parts of the country while they are employed by different assignments.

If you are the type of person who likes to be close to their family and can not deal with being away from their family for long periods of times then you need to be aware that a traveling nurse can be gone for roughly 6 week periods of time to much longer. A typical assignment lasts from 6 weeks on up to 52 weeks. The one plus to this is that you can choose your assignments and choose the places you are willing to relocate so if you wish to only go a matter of a few hours away or 2 days away the choice is yours to accept an assignment or not.

Another draw back is that you are on call usually 24 hours a day because you are living on site, or if you are on a cruise ship assignment your services will be rendered as needed. For people who wish to work a set schedule this can sometimes be upsetting to them mentally and physically.

There is sometimes even co-worker resentment to deal with. When a co-worker finds out you are a traveling nurse they know you are being paid higher for the same work that they are doing. This sometimes leads to resentment awkward working situations. The best way to deal with situations like this is to be pleasant and helpful and to understand that you are there to do a job. A lot of times it will even have a non traveling nurse look into becoming a traveling nurse.

Lastly one of biggest drawbacks is dealing with two employers.

The agency you work for and the facility that hired the agency to place a nurse in their employ. Sometimes the provisions in your contract with your agency will conflict with the regulations that the facility is trying to have you work.

What are the requirements for english language teachers

So you believe you have what it takes to be one of the many English language teachers around? You should know that English language teachers are not all of one type – there are differences between English language teachers (just like in other occupations.)

Types of English language teachers

1. EFL – EFL teachers are English language teachers who teach English as a Foreign Language.

2. ESL – Teachers under this category teach English as a Second Language.

3. ESOL – ESOL teachers teach English for Speakers of Other Languages

As you may have observed, these three types of teachers have one thing in common: they are all concerned with helping people trained in other languages (usually their mother tongue) become educated in English. This field of teaching may also be known by other acronyms (and terms) namely:

1. TESL – Teaching of English as a Second Language.

2. TEFL – Teaching of English as a Foreign Language.

3. ELT – English language teaching.

4. TESOL – Teaching of English for Speakers of Other Languages.

You can see that the first three types of English language teachers are just called by the other 4 names and acronyms – but their function is the same: to teach the English language to people who have a mother tongue different from English.

The field populated by English language teachers has grown in so many ways. For one thing, English language teachers may choose to get international accreditation to boost their credentials – particularly if they are planning to migrate to another country. One country that officially demands this, for instance, is Australia which requires potential English language teachers to present the results of their TOEFL exams (yet another acronym to describe English language teachers – it stands for Teaching of English as a Foreign Language.)

At present, there are two umbrella terms to subdivide the field of English language teachers. For those English language teachers concentrating on American English, they rely on the TESOL system. English language teachers who are well versed in British English opt for the ELT system. Countries which used to be territories of the US (such as the Philippines) generally use American English, while countries that may have been under the British in the past (like India) will usually use British English.

An English teacher should be aware of the traits of the English language so that he or she may be better at teaching it.

1. The phonemes of vowels

2. The phonemes of consonants

3. The structure of syllables

4. Vowels which are not stressed

5. The timing of stress

6. Connected speech.

In grammar, the points to take note of are:

1. Articles.

2. Tenses

3. Modal verbs

4. Functions of auxiliaries

5. Idiomatic usage

In vocabulary, a teacher should be honed in:

1. Word derivation

2. Phrasal verbs

3. Size of lexicon.

Some teachers specialize in either written or spoken English.

By being aware of all this concerning the English language, one may become a more effective teacher.

How to improve reading comprehension with video

Copyright 2006 Adam Waxler

Most educators today realize that teaching students how to read is not the sole responsibility of the language arts teacher, yet many teachers still struggle to come up with effective ways to actually improve reading comprehension in the classroom.

After all, the primary purpose of reading is comprehension. Unless you comprehend what you read you might as well be reading a different language. Unfortunately, for many students, reading in the content areas may actually seem like a different language.

This is particularly true in social studies classes when using primary sources that may date back several hundred years. I can recall a lesson I did in my own 8th grade social studies class in which I used a primary source written by Gustavus Vassa, an ex-slave who wrote about his experiences on board a slave ship during the middle passage. Unfortunately, for the students, the primary source reading might as well have been written in a different language, for while my students read the passage, they certainly did not comprehend its meaning.

However, the Gustavus Vassa reading was, and still is, an excellent primary source to use in the classroom. It was my job as a teacher to figure out how.

What I needed to do to improve reading comprehension was tap into students’ prior knowledge about the “middle passage” and the horrors of the slave trade before reading the first-hand account written by Gustavus Vassa. That’s right, understanding reading is based on what you already bring to the table when you open a text, what you already know about a particular topic, your prior knowledge.

There are many ways teachers can tap into students’ prior knowledge such as Venn diagrams, KWL charts, and various prediction strategies. However, one of the most effective strategies, if not the most effective, is to use video clips at the beginning of the lesson prior to the reading assignment. By using video at the beginning of the lesson (rather than at the end), the teacher will tap into and build upon the students’ prior knowledge thereby improving reading comprehension. Furthermore, using video at the beginning of the lesson will increase student motivation to learn. Believe it or not, students will actually read because they want to read.

When the time came to teach about the “middle passage” the following year I knew exactly how I would use the same reading passage, but with much greater success. I would simply start the lesson with a short video clip. The best tool I’ve found for using video clips in the classroom is unitedstreaming.

The beauty of unitedstreaming is in its simplicity. It took only a few minutes for me to find the perfect video clip on the middle passage from unitedstreaming's massive database and download it to my own computer.

Knowing the students had difficulty with the reading by Gustavus Vassa the year before, my intent was to tap into and build on their prior knowledge before tackling the difficult primary source reading.

This time around I started by playing the video clip I had downloaded earlier. The video clip was only about 5 minutes long, but the effect it had was undeniable. Not only, did the video tap into and build upon prior knowledge, but it also sparked student interest and motivated students to want to learn more about the middle passage.

Following the video clip, I had students complete a short map exercise in which they identify products exchanged in the triangle trade (including slaves on the middle passage). The map activity is much more relevant to the students now that they can make the connection between the arrows that represent the slave trade on the map and the visual images of the harsh conditions onboard the slave ships that was shown in the unitedstreaming video.

It is not until the video and the map work were completed that I first introduced the reading by Gustavus Vassa.

While the video most likely answered many of the questions students might have had about the slave trade and the middle passage, it also raised many more. By the time we got to the reading assignment, we not only anticipated and addressed possible comprehension concerns, but also motivated the students to want to read.

The materials I used in this lesson from one year to the next were nearly identical. The only difference was adding the unitedstreaming video clip to the beginning of the lesson. This one significant change, transformed the lesson from being an ineffective lesson to a lesson that inspired student learning and improved reading comprehension.

Today, I use unitedstreaming at least twice a week in my own classroom to do just that…increase student motivation and improve reading comprehension.

Victorian old prints are educational and decorative

If you've ever read a great historical novel, watched a movie set in another era, or gazed at paintings from the Grand Masters, you've probably experienced the feeling of being transported to another time and place. Perhaps you've immersed yourself in a culture from long ago and contemplated what life was like during those times. What did people do for fun? How did they go about the business of daily life? What were their concerns? What were their joys and sorrows?

One way to make history come alive - since the invention of the printing press, at least - is to look through the publications of the time. Magazines, newspapers, and books from an historical period give you a sense of immediacy about the concerns of the day. Reading stories written during those times and seeing old prints and photographs put you in the moment - a moment that's unfiltered by historians or other modern day commentators.

If you're an Anglophile, old prints from newspapers, magazines, and books in the Victorian era give you an "up close and personal" look at life during the 1800s. When you look at natural history and botanical antique prints, for example, you begin to gain an understanding of the ways in which Victorians attempted to bring order to what was, to them, a vast amount of information. By categorizing animals, plants, and so forth, they laid the foundation of many of the classification systems we continue to use to this day. The intricate drawings of birds, animals, and plants contain incredible detail, and the attention given to both black and white old prints and hand colored old prints underscores the need to record the world around them.

Although it's true that history is written by the victors, it is nonetheless interesting to see how Victorian writers and artists depicted various aspects of their social history, such as England's involvement in the Boer War, their admiration of fleets of naval ships, and even pride in their architectural accomplishments. It's even fun to read about the cultural icons of the day, such as those involved in fine art and the theatre.

As amazing as it seems, original Victorian old prints have survived into the twenty-first century. These antique prints come from the pages of magazines, newspapers, and books and are the real deal - not reproductions. People are increasingly viewing old prints as collectibles, and often narrow their collections of old prints to a certain genre, such as social history, natural history, war, ships, or theatre.

Other people enjoy displaying these old prints, and incorporate them into their home decorating plans. A man may, for example, place naval history or war prints in his study, while others may choose botanical old prints for the sunroom. Some choose to place historical old prints on top of an end table and cover them with glass or Plexiglas, while true Anglophiles seek to reproduce the Victorian experience throughout their homes through the use of fabrics, colors, and old prints that reflect the era.

Immersing yourself in a bygone time can take many forms, but collecting and displaying Victorian antique prints gives you the opportunity to own a piece of history.

Aspen learning content management server taking e-learning to the next level

Who talked about elearning 30 years ago? This was an unknown word even in the education world. The education field and the various education methods have changed so radically the recent years that if a teacher from the late sixties were able to step into the future and access todays world of education without knowing what has happened, would probably believe he or she had arrived at another planet. Companies around the world today compete to bring products and technologies to market faster than ever before. The global economy means that delaying by even a few weeks can mean the difference between market leader and market follower. To train a global workforce about new products and skills needed to compete in the global marketplace more and more organizations are turning to using online education delivery systems such as the Aspen Learning Content Management Server system. This fully integrated, online learning or educational system allows content to be delivered, measured and managed worldwide at the click of a button.

With a workforce that can be spread across multiple continents, and ever-decreasing budgets for travel and training, companies are turning to online content delivery systems to bring training to the employees without worrying about travel or instructor expenses. Utilizing such systems an organization can tailor learning needs to the individual employee, department or organizational goal. A training module can be customized based on the role the employee plays in the organization and what level of training they will need to fulfill their responsibility in the entire life-cycle of the product.

Online instruction is also a benefit to employees, in addition to the cost-savings benefit to the company. Studies show that employees who receive regular training or more satisfied with their job and by offering online courses the employee can schedule training for when it is convenient for them - be it during the day, in the evening or the weekends.

Life advice looking through a window

Living in today's metropolitan world of cellular phones, mobile computers and other high-tech gadgets is not just hectic but very impersonal. We make money and then invest our time and effort in making more money. Does it end? Not usually because we are never satisfied. How many times have we convinced ourselves that if only we had some more money, life would be so sweet? But then, after receiving a substantial raise, we realize that it wasn't enough and that we need more?

What Should You Do?

I have read many books on life such as Robin Sharma's Monk says this and the monk says that, and they all seem to say that money is not necessary. But it is. Can you do without cash and a lot of it? I know I can't.

So, I went to the neighbourhood Rabbi and asked for advice that will help me find my true way in life.

The rabbi nodded and took me to the window. "What do you see?" he asked me.

Promptly, I answered, "I can see people walking to and fro and a blind man is begging for alms at the left corner."

The Rabbi nodded and guided me to a big mirror. "Now look and tell me what you see?"

"I can see myself," I man answered.

The Rabbi smiled. "Now you can't see anyone else. The mirror and the window are both created from the same raw material: glass, but because on one of them they have applied a thin layer of silver, when you look at it all you can see is your own reflection."

The Rabbi placed his arm on my shoulders. "Compare yourself to those two pieces of glass. Without the silver layer, you saw the other people and felt compassion for them. When you are covered with silver, you see only yourself."

I looked at the Rabbi and stared. "I don't understand."

The Rabbi continued. "You will become someone only if have the courage to remove the silver covering over your eyes in order to again see and love others." He patted me on my back and sent me on my way.

I have thought of what he said and come to the conclusion that he had a point. Yes. We need money and we should not aim to lead a moneyless existence; its pointless and will only cause us and our families many heartbreaks in the future.

Instead, I suggest that we should follow the advice the Rabbi gave me. When we approach life through a silver covering, all we are able to see is ourselves. But discard that covering, and you will be able to see and feel everyone else.

In life, we are allowed to and should be able to look at both kinds of mirrors, but we should remember that a mirror reflects only us; a window is the door to compassion, health and true wealth. In other words, seek wealth by all means, but don't let it dissuade you from life, people, children and the poor and needy.

An overview of asia

Asia is the largest continent when measured by landmass and human population. Following is an overview of Asia.

Asia is considered one of the seven continents. This continental definition, however, is far broader than many people think. Under the seven continent methodology, Asia stretches from Japan in the East through Russia in the West. It encompasses Saudi Arabia and everything above Asia. While it doesn’t always make practical sense, there is no denying this definition of Asia makes it the home of over 60 percent [4 billion] of all humans. China and India, of course, are the locations of a vast majority of these people.

In modern times, geographers recognize there really is no dividing line between Asia to the west and Europe to the East. This has resulted in the entire area being called Eurasia, but thousands of years of terminology aren’t about to pass into antiquity. Today, most people refer to Europe as a continent so far as it extends to the Ural Mountains in Russia. Everything to the east of that mountain range is considered Asia. For instance, Israel is considered a country in Western Asia!

Russia has even picked up on this theme with the two heads on the national flag. The west facing head refers to the European part of Russia while the East facing head refers to the Asian part of the country. Within Russia, it is almost as if there are two countries with Moscow and St. Petersburg having heavy European influences. Cities in the Far East, such as Vladivostok, are much more oriented to China and such.

To resolve the boundary issue, the powers that be have started defining Asia subcontinents. The areas are:

Central Asia - Kazakhstan Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.

1. East Asia – China, Japan, Mongolia, Taiwan, North and South Korea.

2. North Asia - Russia.

3. India Subcontinent – India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka.

4. Southeast Asia - Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar [Burma], Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

5. Southwest Asia – The Middle East including Turkey, Iran, Cyprus, Israel, Lebanon and sometimes Egypt.

Given the problems defining the boundaries of Asia, you can imagine it is also difficult to define certain characteristics regarding the continent. After all, life in Turkey is much different than in China. Conversely, customs in India are completely different than those in China. In fact, most people living in Asia take offence when someone uses the word “Asians” to refer to them. The word implies a similarity among all people in Asia, which simply isn’t true.

Economically, things are a bit easier to categorize. The largest economy in Asia is China as a measure of gross domestic product. Officially known as the People’s Republic of China, this country remains communist in name only when it comes to economic issues. With massive economic growth over the last 10 years, China is the second largest economy in the world after the United States. Another heavily populated area, India, is now the fourth biggest economy in the world, while relatively small Japan is the third. Put in practical terms, Asia is home to three of the four biggest economies on Earth. The three dominant financial centers are Hong Kong, Tokyo and Singapore.

With so many countries, it is hardly surprising to find a wide variety of religious practices in Asia. There are a wide variety of belief systems, but Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam have the largest number of adherents.

Figuring out exactly what constitutes Asia is largely a matter of opinion. Among many assertions about Asia, the undisputable one is it is the home to the largest percentage of humans on the planet.

Learn to love book summaries

I have been a college professor for nearly twenty years. I say that only to give background to the piece of advice that I am about to share with you. I'm often asked by students that are about to head off to college if I have any words of wisdom or pieces of advice to share with them. Yes, I do. I have a lot of advice for students entering college. The college world is drastially different than life growing up with your family. There is much I could share, but I'll stick to one piece of advice that might surprise you: learn to love book summaries.

What? Not the advice you were expecting? Well, there you have it. My number one piece of advice (academically anyway) for students entering college. You are surprised by this because I have already said that I am a college professor. Well, I'll explain why book summaries can save your college experience. It is really quite simple.

College isn't easy. You've probably heard that from every person you know that has been in college and lived to talk about it. It is not high school anymore, and so everything is cranked up a level and you'll find that more is required of you in college. Having more required of you also means that more books are assigned to you and that more reading is required of you. Hence my advice about book summaries.

Book summaries are one of the greatest tools you can use to get the most information out of all there is to know. For example, if you have a week where you are assigned a different book to read in each of your five classes, then there is no way that you'll be able to read each book entirely. Instead, go for book summaries.

Book summaries can often be found in libaries or at online sources. Do some research before you head off to college and see what sources of book summaries you can find. Another tip that one of my own college professors gave me during college was to read the introduction or opening chapter of every book, then read only the first and last sentences of each paragraph throughout the book until you reached the summary chapter which you would read entirely. He gave me this method and I used it throughout college and then in grad school. It is a way of making your own book summaries when you cannot get ahold of one.

College is hard enough without having to balance all the reading that is required. Get your hands on book summaries and your college experience will be easier, less stressful and more full of the things you want to enjoy.
