Using subdomains to bypass googles sandbox

There was apparently some talk at SES Chicago on getting a site indexed in regular results a lot quicker. This involved the use of an existing established similar domain (either one you own or one you bought) and use it to help you get a site out of the “sandbox.” The full forum post can be found here.

The technique is in the gray-to-black range. I wanted to mention that first, however if your site has been boxed for a while, this may be an alternative for you. It also requires some coding, and assumes your site is built in PHP although I would also guess there is similar ASP code out there.

First lets look at how this works: You have an established related domain and a new domain which is ‘boxed. By establishing a subdomain on the established site and mirroring the content of the new domain there you will get the new subdomain indexed more quickly because it would inherit some of the trust of the main domain.

Once it has established itself you would use some form of redirect (likely a 301) to redirect crawlers to the new domain. The new domain then inherits whatever the subdomain gained in terms of link popularity transferred from the established, trusted domain.

Sounds simple, but there are a few things you need to do.

First, obviously, is to find an established domain. If you need to buy an expired but still relevant site (and it’s in your budget) the author recommends you do so. You would also not change the registrar information, according to the author (this would be considered in that dark gray range).

You don’t want to change the registrar information because there is a chance that Google will notice the change in ownership and any trust the domain you just bought has previously earned would likely be lost.

So lets say you just bought a related domain that’s been around for a couple years and has a PageRank 5. by leaving the site intact and not changing the registrar information you are essentially ensuring the site maintains its existing stature in the engines.

Then you will create a subdomain on the site. Here you will place a mirrored copy of all your content navigation, etc. from your new site. Since the new site hasn’t been added to the index yet there will not be a duplicate content penalty.

You will also use some PHP coding to change the page header information to fool the webserver into thinking the page was created earlier than it was (the suggested PHP code is found in the forum post linked above). By telling the webserver the pages are old, you are informing the crawler that the pages are old as well.

This is because the crawler requests this information from the webserver at the time of indexing.

Because you’ve established a completely new section within an established domain the new section will get indexed sooner than the new domain.

It will inherit link popularity and trust from the parent domain allowing it to establish itself more quickly than the new site.

Once the subdomain has been fully indexed by Google you will want to redirect it to the new domain.

By doing this you have allowed the content to be found by Google which then assumes the pages are properly aged because it has been told by the webserver that the pages are in fact old (even though in reality you’ve recently created them).

By redirecting the subdomain you are then passing the inheritance and trust given to the subdomain by the main domain to the new site.

The reason this works is because the established site is already trusted by Google. Therefore the vote from the trusted site helps illustrate to Google that the new site is also trusted.

There are some things to consider with this tactic however:

Now that it’s been widely publicized I wouldn’t expect it will take that long for Google to realize the hole and patch it.

Also, the whole trustbox patent is based partly on authority but also on age. So while a page may appear old (because you’ve altered the page header served) Google may opt to instead consider the page’s age from the time it found the page.

In other words, even if the page is a year old, if Googlebot just found the page yesterday then it’s only 1 day old. While the patent does say that “scoring the document based, at least in part, on the inception date corresponding to the document,” it also goes on to say that Google could determine that age to be not the page date, but the date when it found the page.

And remember that like any type of blatant manipulation you risk being penalized by Google. Google engineers also visit these forums, don’t forget, so they are also keenly aware when new tactics are shared which are designed to circumvent the current algorithms.

Therefore it is their job to fix those holes, and likely also find ways to penalize the sites taking advantage of the holes. While no one can prove or disprove this theory, I’ve heard of enough sites which have been removed from the index for doing something they weren’t supposed to.

Therefore, while this may sound like a great way to get yourself out of the ‘box early, consider the alternatives. What if you do get out of the index early but Google catches on in 3 months, 6 months or more? Do you think they may decide to “backdate” any changes to your site if they determine that you participated in such a tactic? Then, not only are you back where you started, you could be worse off than if you had just taken your lumps and done things properly.

Google and your domain name

Google, being the largest and most used search engine and is extremely important to optimize your website for. As a matter of fact, if you optimize your website just for Google you’d find your rankings in Yahoo! and MSN will jump up higher than your ranking in Google. I’ve optimized many websites that show up in at least the top 20 listings in Google and found that in each case they ranked higher in Yahoo! and MSN usually in the top 3 positions with most in the number one spots.

Most everyone agrees that with Google content is king. So writing good copy with just the right amount of keyword phrases, for keyword density is important. And natural anchor text links is second to the throne, which takes lots of work and proper timing to do properly.

Third in line are keyword phrases (notice I said phrase because single keywords are almost impossible to optimize for), which need to be researched to find the right phrase for you and not used to often in the content/text to get the right density. Used to often and you’ll hurt your ranking.

Fourth in line are the Meta Description Tag which when used properly can actually bring visitors to your website who wouldn’t normally come there. Of course there are several other factors involved with getting that elusive number one spot.

But what most everyone often overlooks is what I call the fifth element which Google uses to determine their ranking of a website and that's the domain name.

People, even SEO companies, don’t either know the importance of the domain name to Google or take the time to chose the proper name for the website. Most just use their company name or what they conceder a "Cool" name for their websites. Now, unless your company is well known or at least well known in its field, using a basically unknown company name is pointless. Even more pointless is the "Cool" name.

The entire reason you optimize your website is to get visitors from search engines, so why not use all the tools available to get the best ranking possible for your website.

Use your domain name as one of those tools. Instead of your company name or the "Cool" one, use a keyword phrase, one that describes your product or service. Take your time in choosing the proper name. Make sure that it will work best for your website. If you not sure ask your friends and relatives what keywords they would use to find your product or services on the Internet. You might be surprised at what they would use.

You have the keyword phrase that you know will work. But before you jump online and get that domain name there are a couple of things you may still need to do.

Let's say you're the owner of Mike's Bikes and you specialize in Colorado Mountain Bikes so you figure to kill two birds with one stone and use the domain name mikescoloradomountainbikes. com to keep your name in it along with using the keyword phrase. Now this might make sense to you but you’re not Google. You're not going to like it but you need to drop the mikes out of the name because it's dead weight.

So now you've got coloradomountainbikes. com but wait before you burn up the keyboard use Colorado-mountain-bikes. com instead. Why? Because Google sees this as three different words and would see coloradomountainbikes. com as a single word. When people are doing a search they will not be using coloradomountainbikes, they are going to use Colorado mountain bikes. The bonus is that your domain name now becomes a keyword phrase used by Google when it performs a search.

There should be more to your seo consultant than rankings

: Perhaps one of the biggest misconceptions in SEO is that ranking at Google and Yahoo is all that counts in search engine optimization. Potential clients come to me with a single goal: "Get me a top-ten ranking at Google." Some will also mention MSN, and a few will rhyme off a list of search engines and want to rank well at the top 200 of them.

It is time to separate fact from fiction.

Yes, your SEO consultant can get you a top-ten placement at Google. But...

  1. If the placement is for "dirty brown shoes", it probably won't help your shoe store one bit, even if I get you the first place ranking. Few people are actually searching for that term.

  2. Being number ten might not help much either, depending on the term. People searching for "Essential Nectar liquid vitamins", will probably click on the first result they see, or at least on one of the "above-the-fold" results that do not require scrolling. On the other hand, someone searching for "liquid vitamins" might check through two pages of results to familiarize herself with the options available.

  3. If your title tag reads like a cheap list of search terms, it will not be enticing. For instance, if it reads: "vitamins, liquid vitamins, multivitamins, multi-vitamins", you might skip over it in favor of the next result that reads "Liquid vitamins from the Liquid Vitamin Supplements Store".

  4. If your description tag is a mess, people will more likely skip over your listing, even if it does rank number one, in favor of one that sounds like what they are looking for. Google and others use the description tag usually when the term searched for is found in it, so make sure to include your key search terms in a description tag that actually reads well.

I recently responded to a forum question, which went something like this: My site ranks number one for this term at this engine. The term is searched this many times per day, and the engine has this percentage marketshare. Can I expect this many visitors?

That's not an SEO challenge; that's a math problem: searches x marketshare = visitors

Beyond Your SEO Consultant's Control?

I responded with a few factors that override mathematics in the SEO game, including the site's title tag and description tag, as well as whether the term lends itself to scrolling. I also pointed out that it depends on the title tags and description tags of the competition, too.

Another factor that makes predicting traffic difficult is the abandonment factor – how many people click on none of the results because they get interrupted or confused, or abandon the search for a new one because they find themselves off-topic or searching too broadly.

It also depends on how many sponsored links there are and how they are marked. Often at Yahoo and Lycos, for example, there are so many ads that the average searcher might never scroll a screen or two to see the organic (natural) results.

And, of course, it also depends on the color of the walls in the room the searcher is clicking from, the weather outside and how well they slept last night. But there is little you can do about that.

What you can do is to work with your SEO consultant to choose the most effective search terms for your business and make sure he develops a title tag and description tag that sell to both humans and the search engines. Then make sure he is monitoring not just the rankings for your key search terms, but also the description used by each of the search engines.

A good ranking at Google and Yahoo is just one measure of your SEO consultant's success. A more complete evaluation is that he is your partner in building long-term, targeted traffic.

Why backlinks are important for your website s search engine ranking

: Like any investment, your website must start turning a profit as early as possible, and pulling the search engines is a critical component. There are several tools your site can use to get these rankings: 1.Search-engine optimized text 2.Fresh content frequently 3.Links to your site from high-profile websites 4.Traffic to and from your site The first two are all about how you put your web site together and subsequently work with it. The last one – quality inbound links – has nothing at all to do with your site, and if you work it properly, can give you both great rankings and pull in a surprising amount of traffic from sites other than search engines. Once you start building up your traffic, your search engine ratings will stabilize, and your site will slowly grow. It's a lot like starting a car – it takes a lot of energy to get it going, but once it's running it only takes maintenance energy. Article Submissions Services: Getting Those Inbound Links Most people don't know where to start with inbound links. Do you just email webmasters and ask? Buy advertising? Or do you offer your own site up as a link farm, encouraging your hard-won customers to visit someone else? None of these are the best bet (though emailing webmasters, over time, is a good additional strategy). The best way you can get great inbound links is by using an article submission service. These services use article directories, large online repositories of articles donated by webmasters like you, to build backlinks to your site. Each article you donate contains a resource box that points back to your website, in whatever format you desire. And you can donate the same article to hundreds of article directories. You can do this yourself. But article submissions services know how to find the best directories, and have specialists who can enter your information in the often-tedious and time-consuming directories forms. It may be a better expenditure of your time to focus on that great content and building your business in other ways, while leaving the submissions to experts who can do it cheaply, efficiently, and properly. Article submissions services understand the search engines and how they examine links, and can use this knowledge to benefit you. And because you can expect the search engines to change their methodology about every four to six months, with major changes every year and a half to a year, these services will always have the most up-to-date information on the best way to use links to enhance your placement. While you may be able to build your website ranking yourself, it's often better to seek help from people who have done it for years, at least the first few times you submit a site. Article submission services are your perfect ally when you're chasing search engine rankings. Appropriate Linking There are only so many directories you can submit to, of course. Once you have maxed out your directory submission, you can start looking for webmasters to trade links with. There are a few things you should seek out in this case. Your link partners should be suitable for you, and you should be right for them as well. You should trade up as much as you can; look for pages with good rankings themselves. Don't trade with a competitor; if you sell similar merchandise or if you're both close together using the same keyword phrase, you should trade with someone else. But link trading only works once your site has been built up in the search engines. Few webmasters are willing to trade links with a low-ranking site (would you?). For the quickest rankings boost, and for a great foundation that you can really start to work from, use mass articles submissions. It will set you apart and above your competition.

The death of the link exchange

Link Exchanges have been used since the beginning of the internet as a way of gaining popularity in the eyes of the major search engines. This used to be the best way to gain positioning in the major search engine results for your given keywords. Your company could gain ground fairly quickly by utilizing link exchanges.

Wikipedia’s Definition of a link exchange:

Link Exchange ("Reciprocal Link Exchange") is the practice of exchanging links with other websites. There are many different ways to arrange a link exchange with webmasters. The simplest way of doing it is to email another website owner and ask to do a link exchange. Also visiting webmaster discussion boards which offer a dedicated link exchange forum where webmasters can request a link exchange be it of a certain category or open to anybody.

Link exchange has been a long time practice by website owners since the beginning of the web. In the last few years (after year 2000), this practice has gained more popularity as search engines such as Google started favoring sites that had more links in the rankings. This system was very accurate at gauging the importance of a website when it first started, leading to the popularity of Google.

However according to experts, search engines no longer place a heavy emphasis on reciprocal links. Instead, the popularity or credibility of a site is now gauged by one way incoming links to that site. In addition, analysis suggests that it is very important both that the theme of an incoming be link be relevant to the page being linked to.

This definition can be found here: http://en. wikipedia. org/wiki/Link_exchange

The death of the link exchange is officially here. Relevant one-way links are the most important aspect of search engine optimization since the newest algorithm changes for the major search engines. Yahoo has gone as far as denying sites admission into their search submit program for having a link exchange program, considering it spam (I have personal experience with this).

The best way to build relevant links is by utilizing these aspects of search engine optimization:

1. Directory Submissions: The all important DMOZ (www. dmoz. org) and yahoo directory (www. yahoo. com) are mandatory for any company seeking high rankings in the search engines. Be sure to search for relevant directories for your company. You can do this by searching for your major keywords in search engines with the word “directory” and will find them fairly easily.

2. Article Submissions: By writing articles that can be reprinted for free, you get free advertising and webmasters get content to deliver to their customers through an article database or e-zines. You are allowed to include a resource box at the end of your article that contains information about your company and the all important link to your website.

3. Social Book Marking: Social Book Marking is a new trend on the internet that was pioneered by sites like del. icio. us, www. furl. net, www. digg. com and many others. This is the act of book marking a site to a public (or private) favorites archive that other web users can use to find important information. You then use tags to identify your book mark for the relevant keywords. This also generates a link pointing to your site.

The link exchange has officially become useless. End your link exchanges now while you still have the chance to do so. In the near future, search engines may penalize sites that take part in link exchanges, so take advantage now and get rid of them before you lose crucial positioning in the search engine results pages.

Importance of search engine visibility

A lot of people search the internet generally when they are in require of some service or to expand product information. Most people would do search using few keywords as they are unconscious of the brands they want to use to advantage the service or product. Also the person who is searching frequently decides before he hits the end of the search page.

Well that leaves us with only one question, how can one get good search engine visibility? How can the product or solution on extend be visible in the first page itself?

There are few tips that can really help you to achieve visibility on the search engines and that means your content is accessible to millions of Internet browsers.

First thing you will have to do is find out what words do people use to search to access a particular service or product and their related key words. Once you set your keywords you could Meta tag the same to represent the entire company’s website content.

Once you have the list of key words you have to try and use these keywords in your content of the website. The more keywords you collect and add on to your content the more will be the visibility for your website.

Regular press releases using these keywords can also do the trick. This way you have more gain more visibility and more search engines will pick up your data as it’s the latest update. Do make sure your press release has relevant and important data so that your possible client gets all wanted information. As he lands on your website he should see the expression of the information he has seen and should be satisfied with the further information he expected on your website. Start a blog so that you and your employees add on that and they become an entire part of the domain you control on.

With a good search engine visibility you have already won the war of the markets, as most people would not even look at the other websites. So your competition is already filtered and you are ready to be the leader. So now Prepare your content filled with keywords and get ready to rule the market!

Link building for seo on a new site

Ah, the joys of link building and search engine optimization. If you have a new site, here is a tip that you might want to consider. Then again, you may just want to pitch it.

Link Building for SEO On A New Site

Link building simply refers to an issue known as relevancy. When ranking sites in search engine results, Google tends to list the site that is the most relevant. There are a lot of factors that go into determining relevancy, but the number of other sites linking to yours is one of them. This is why a site like the one for the IRS is high in search results for tax issues even though it does not trade links per se.

Ideally, you want only inbound links from other sites that are relevant to the subject of your site. If you have a plumbing site, you want links from other plumbing or home improvement sites. Despite all the junk email you receive, links from casino and pharmacy sites are not going to help the rankings for your plumbing site. They will hurt the rankings because they are not relevant.

When building links to your site, Google favors a slow, steady increase in links. If you want top rankings on Google, you should follow this mantra with one exception. If you have a new site, you need not be a slave to this approach.

As you probably know, new sites are not ranked by Google. Instead, your site will sit for six months or so in the much discussed Google sandbox. Given this fact, you really don’t need to worry about Google for the same period of time when it comes to your links. Google isn’t going to rank you anyway, so picking up the pace isn’t really a problem.

With a brand new site, I prefer to create as many legitimate, relevant links as possible as soon as possible. The reason is I find it beneficial to start aging the links as soon as possible. Links to your site tend to grow in value the longer they exist on another site. From my point of view, why not maximize the number as quickly as possible? It isn’t like it is going to hurt your rankings on Google. You aren’t going to have any!

In taking this approach, I am not suggesting that you purchase links, use link farms or so on. I am just suggesting that you maximize your link trading efforts immediately to build up as many links as possible and get the aging process rolling. As you approach month four in the sandbox, you can start scaling back your efforts to a more slow and steady approach. Its worked for me.

Latent semantic indexing and search engines optimimization seo

By Jose Nuсez

The closest search engines have come to actual applications of this technology so far is know as "Associative Indexing" and it is put in effect under Stemming, or the indexing of words on the basis of their uninflected roots (plurals, adverbs, and adjectival forms are reduced to simple noun and verb forms before indexing).

Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) is a technique in natural language processing, in particular in vectorial semantics, invented in 1990 [1] by Scott Deerwester, Susan Dumais, George Furnas, Thomas Landauer, and Richard Harshman. In the context of its application to information retrieval, it is sometimes called Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI).

Here are some quick facts about Latent Semantic Indexing:

1. LSI is 30% more effective than popular word matching methods.

2. LSI uses a fully automatic statistical method (Singular Value Decomposition)

3. It is very effective in cross-languages retrievals.

5. LSI can retrieve relevant information that does not contain query words.

6. It finds more relevant information than other methods.

Latent Semantic Indexing adds an important step to the document indexing process. In addition to recording which keywords a document contains, the method examines document collections as a whole, to see which others do contain some of those same words. LSI considers documents that have many words in common to be semantically close, and ones that have few words in common to be semantically distant. This method correlates surprisingly well with how a human being looking at content, classifies multiple documents.

First and foremost, when it comes to domain names, try to stay away from the silly, stupid, ridiculous or clever. Keep your domain name simple and make it something your customers can remember if they lose the link to your business website. Take note that, while your domain name on Geocities or AOL may seem like the least expensive way to go, it may also get you dropped from certain search engines. Some search engines ignore domain addresses that reside on these ‘free servers’ or on the ‘cheap’ servers. Even if your site is recognized and considered by search engines, a professional domain name that uses your primary company name or associated words is likely to get more attention and be considered as a stable business by your prospective customers. Purchasing domain names are not that expensive which cost about $100 and there are many companies that can register the name for you, provided it is available and has not already been used by another company. Using one of your keywords in your domain name can increase your score on some search engines. For example, solderingirons. com could be more effective as Electric-soldering-irons. com, if that domain name was available. You might also choose to establish more than one domain name using keywords and then link your ‘doorway’ domain sites to your primary site. But you will have to pay for each of the domain name and also the monthly hosting fees. It all depends on the type and size of your business and your competition. Keep in mind that some search engines disregard ‘doorway’ sites. So put at least a page of content on the doorway site with some useful information and then link it to your primary site. But don’t design it as an empty page. The other reason being, you can have one, three, five, or even more email addresses that all contain your business name, and give your business a professional feel. Seo provides a big help for most internet users

SEO or the search engine optimization is the way of creating web pages eye-catching to most of the search engines. This is the way of altering a web site in a course of a plan and writing methods that will improve your site on the main search engines.

Search engine optimization is simply assuring that the web pages are available in all search engines. And this is also centering on the means that will make them enhance the probability that internet users will find the page using search engines.

A page that is well enhanced optimized will become the top placing in the search engine result lists. This is very significant because most people who use the search engine would tend to only look at the first page. Since a well optimized pages is located at the first or second page of the search engine it is very possible that the researcher will read it.

The main aim to become a search engine effective is to have the pages available at the first two pages or first pages (if possible) for specific key terms. They are five crucial rules for search engine optimization and they are:

1. Keep in mind that each page of your website is a detach unit. Each page should relate to the fundamentals of an efficient search engine optimization.

2. Select for a suitable key words or phrases that you will use for each web page. It is important that the key words or phrases relates to the topic.

3. Provide every page with a proper and suitable title that contains the key word or phrases even once.

4. Once you are choosing the key words or phrases, place it in the page’s title tag, Meta key words and Meta description. The Meta description should be interesting if necessary since most search engine utilize the description in the search engine results pages.

5. Make it certain that the key words or phrase you have selected is reiterated sensibly all through out the page’s content. If you did not do it, there is a possibility that it may be considered as spam and be rejected.

Some may tell you that these are only the five fundamentals to effective search engine. However when you utilize these five basics, surely it will provide your page chances of appearing in the first page of the most search engines or else at the second (which is still good).

Below are listed search engine optimization tips when it comes to its importance:

• Possible site plan

• Selecting the right keywords

• The title tag

• The copywriting

• The Meta tag

• The descriptions alt quality

• Things that should be avoided

• How long will it take to be programmed

Most people are easily gets upset when the articles that they are looking for are unavailable in the internet. Sometimes it would take them hours and hours looking for the articles. And since most people would rely on the articles of the search results first page, chances are the articles at the latter pages will likely be noticed as much as the first pages.

This is what makes the search engine optimization important this time; it helps the internet surfers find their researches the easiest way possible. Especially at this era of computer oriented lifestyle, most people know how to use computers and most people uses the internet for some important matters. Black hat seo what never to do or get banned

While there are many legitimate skills in SEO there are also those that can work but if you get caught using them the results can be disastrous. When search engine optimization became an issue many techniques were employed because at that point the search engines used a much simpler algorithm. As these tricks were used to exploit the simpler algorithms they were also served to make them more advanced. Let’s look at a few tricks.

Cloaking and redirects are methods whereby you show one page to the search engine but a different one to the visitor. A redirect merely brings visitors to one page and then sends them to another page by refreshing the page with one on their site. Cloaking involves fooling a search engine’s indexer into thinking that it is something else and getting the indexer to send false information back to its boss.

Other techniques involve overloading metatags with keywords or even hiding keywords in plain site on the webpage. A variation on this technique is to shrink the keywords so that are too small to be seen by the naked eye.

Using unrelated keywords is another trick especially when combined with the above mentioned tricks. By using unrelated keywords in this manner you can drive traffic to your site from multiple sources.

Using an overly optimized landing page can also work. This is not the same thing as a legitimate landing page. In this case you use any and all methods to overly optimize a single and use that to lead people to your site. This would involve using all of the above methods for this one page.

The ultimate penalty for using the unscrupulous methods is banishment from the search engines themselves. Be careful when you employ these dark methods for fear of this punishment. Being penalized is one thing but to not even be on a search engine in the first place is your worst case scenario.

How to find an ethical search engine marketing company

: It’s a dog-eat-dog marketplace out there. The web is teeming with millions of websites and yours is just another one of them. To rise above and ahead of this cut-throat competition, you need to work with an effective search engine marketing company that can put your website up among the top results in relevant keyword searches and help you reach out to your target audience. Search engine marketing is vital for improving your site’s conversion rate, attracting relevant traffic and maximising your Return on Investment (ROI). Search engine optimisation is not an overnight job. It is a highly specialised and time consuming task. It may take months to get the desired results. Although search engines issue broad guidelines, no one can say with certainty exactly how search engines rank websites. A professional SEO company has a good understanding of search engine behavior and experience in successfully achieving top ranking websites to advise you about the competition, ingredients, mechanisms and strategies that can be employed to make your website visible, frequently visited and a revenue generator. The top 3 search engines, Google, Yahoo! and MSN, receive over 1.2 billion searches daily! Unless you use the correct search engine optimisation techniques with your website, you will not rank high with the search engines. Here is where the services of a professional search engine marketing company to handle your SEO campaign may help to deliver the desired results. Search engines are strict about ethics Search engines are clear in their guidelines about what they like and what they don’t like. A good search engine optimisation company uses the specific sets of criteria laid down by search engines and their expertise gained over the years about what has worked in the past to increase the rankings of your site. The SEO steps that abide by the search engine guidelines are called ethical and practices that are not approved by search engine guidelines are unethical. Because search engines operate in an automated way, it is possible for webmasters to use methods not approved by search engines for better ranking. But these unethical attempts are fraught with risks. Once your site is caught using unethical practices and banned by search engines, it will take a long time and a significant amount of effort to rank high in search engines again. Some SEO companies may use unethical practices to get high rankings of your website, but the results are only temporary. In fact they are devaluing your site. Unethical search engine marketing companies do not consider the long term and want to show quick results to impress you. Hence, it is important to find an ethical SEO company that will ensure sustainable high search engine rankings. Unethical SEO Practices It's disheartening that many companies claim to be in top rankings of search engine but the truth is many of them are hype. If you’re serious about your business, don’t try to bluff the search engines. The unethical practices will be caught eventually, leaving your website far behind the competition. Unethical practices used by search engine optimisation companies include: Keywords stuffing: Unnecessary repetition of keywords in the content Page swapping: A highly unethical practice where a webmaster copies a page from a high-ranking website, changes the title and description META tags, then submits this page to the search engines. Once a ranking is obtained, they replace the stolen page with one of their own web pages. Copyright violation: Copying content of other websites without permission. Irrelevant link exchange: Establishing reciprocal links with irrelevant websites for the sole purpose of increasing the number of links to your website. How to select an ethical SEO company Here are some tips for selecting an ethical SEO services company: Learn the basics of SEO: Study some basics of website promotion and search engine optimisation (SEO) techniques so that it will not be a new concept to you. These can be accessed easily on internet. Just spend little time to your research. Does it sound too good? Be wary if an SEO company offers ultra quick results. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is unethical. Both time and efforts are involved in the SEO process. There are no short cuts. Evaluate your needs: Evaluate which SEO program best fits your needs. You can evaluate this by checking sales conversions, log reports, and so on. You must discuss your objectives with the SEO services provider then analyze yourself, how good it would be for serving your purpose. Guarantee: Make sure that the search engine marketing company gives you some level of guarantee for their services. But, be wary of companies that offer a #1 ranking guarantee. No one has that much control over Google, and it is a sure sign that they may use unethical practices. Experience: Check the industry experience of the people behind the company and also get feedback from the references given. Strategies: When you choose to optimise your website, you need to look at the methodology a search engine optimisation company would be using. Ask the SEO company about the strategies they are going to use to optimise your website... Cost: You usually get what you pay for. An offer for 500 links for $29 is a possible sign of unethical practices. You need to keep in mind these few points while you research SEO services for your website. Return on investment (ROI) can depend on several factors, such as the size of your market place, geographical target area, the sales value of your products/services and the number of people searching online for your products/services. Searching for an authentic ethical SEO company is a time consuming task. But remember that it’s not simply enough to only achieve better search engine rankings. Your website needs to be designed in a way to ensure you convert your visitors into buyers to boost your sales and revenues and increase your brand recognition. If you are wondering how to find an ethical SEO company, visit, a leading SEO and PPC services provider in Sydney, Australia. The higher a Web site ranks in the results of a search, the greater the chance that that site will be visited by a user.

• Meta Tags

• Navigational links

• Rich Content

Meta Tags:

Meta Tags are very important for your website's visibility. Many search engines read them from your site when you submit it to them. Major meta tags that you can use:

Meta Title

The only resource type that is currently in use is "document" This is the only tag that you need to put in for indexing purposes.

Meta Description

Depending on the search engine, this will be displayed along with the title of your page in an index. "content" could be a word, sentence or even paragraph to describe your page. Keep this reasonably short, concise and to the point.

Meta Keyword

Choose whatever keywords you think are appropriate, seperated by commas.

Navigational links:

at the right or at the bottom, but not on the left, of the page. When the search engines "read" your site, they read from the top left to the bottom right. Search engines place an emphasis on the first 100 words or text on the site. You do not want these words to be navigational links or Javascript. Ideally, you want to have your heading tags with your keywords in the beginning of your page. This being said, placing your links/JavaScript on the right or bottom of your page ensures the search engine spiders get to the text first, giving more weight to what's important on your page.

Rich Content:

The more content you have on your site the more likely someone is to find what they're looking for when they get there. Keep your site very content rich. Have a lot of pages. Update the site even twice a day if you have the time. Updating your site does not mean that you copy paste content from other sites. That will only push your rankings further down. Don't have any duplicate content. At the same time, dont spam multiple content across the same website. When a search engine views or reviews a website, which they do at least every few months, it looks for specific characteristics found in the content of website landing pages. Seo strategies for using holes in search engines to their fullest

Copyright 2006 Mark Nenadic

You may have heard of black holes – not the astronomical kind – but don’t know what they are or how to use them to your advantage when it comes to your site and the major search engines such as Google, Yahoo!, and MSN. To begin with, it is important that you understand that black holes in search engines can seriously impact the quality of all of your search engine optimization (SEO) strategies.

For example, Google is currently the leader in both popularity and technology among search engines on the web. It functions by allowing its users to run a search using words or phrases. This will only happen more frequently as text-to-speech applications expand in their use. The way in which Google applies these words and phrases immediately presents the first fault within their indexing and searching strategies. Here, there lies a big black hole in the accuracy of the search results that Google produces. The location of this black hole? Whenever smaller, common words are used within a Google search phrase, it will provide you with different results than you would receive by using other common words instead. The following example explains this.

If you perform the following searches:

• Toronto Hotels

• Hotels in Toronto

• Hotels for Toronto

• About Toronto Hotels

You will receive different results every time. Though Google will indicate to you that you have used a common word, and that this word was excluded from the search, it will still have provided you with different search results depending on which ones you have used.

Obviously, all of the above searches were for the same thing, but because of the small words used in the phrases, they achieved different results. Why? It is because of the black hole in Google’s searching algorithm

The same is true when one changes the words from singular to plural, or otherwise makes grammatical changes. For example, the following searches all produce different results:

• Debt management

• Managing debt

• Managing debts

Again, these searches are obviously for the same things, but produced entirely different results. Try these two examples on your own computer, using Google, and you’ll see for yourself.

It is important to recognize that in both examples, all of the searches produced relevant results. However, while they are all equally correct as far as context, the fact remains that searches for the same thing, depending on how they’re worded – right down to the pluralizing – does give different lists, with differently ranked sites.

How does this impact you and your SEO? Consider you are running a website that sells widgets. You have done a great deal of work making certain that it is fully search engine optimized and have even reached the point where you are in the second rank at Google for the keyword “widget”. It has taken a great deal of work and maintenance, but you’ve done it…except that your target market doesn’t search for widgets using the keyword “widget”. They pluralize their search term, typing “widgets” in almost universally. Furthermore, when you check your rank with the term “widgets”, then you discover that you’re down at number 23!

Though your work will bring you increased traffic due to your ranking for “widget”, it would have been a great deal higher if you’d included “widgets” in your search engine optimizing strategy.

When you are creating a search engine optimizing strategy for your website, if you want to ensure that you will receive the highest results, it is important that you always include not only your primary keyword in your efforts, but also add a basket full of sub-keywords to cover all of your bases.

By making certain that you are using your phrases in all (or at least many ) of the ways in which your target market will be performing their searches, you will bring in a great deal more traffic, and customers ready to purchase your products or services.

If you are not qualified to do this alone, it is well worth the investment in an expert who can bring your search engine optimization up to a level that will cover all of your most important keywords.

Do-it-yourself seo for beginners

You may want to perform SEO services on your website by yourself but do not know how to get started. You probably have always wanted to get involved more with SEO but simply do not have the time. Unfortunately this is usually caused by the misconception that SEO is easy to implement and does not take a lot of experience. Even though SEO does require experience and time there are several options out there to start doing SEO on your own and be successful.

Option 1: Become an SEO Expert

This is the hardest path to take to implement SEO on your website while yielding the greatest personal satisfaction. You will want to start by spending lots of time reading books and online articles to catch up on the latest SEO trends, practices, and methods. Next you should start experimenting with different methods you learn about, analyze the results, and change your website again. This is the continual learning process of search engine optimization and takes a great amount of time, energy, patience, and resources. However after several months when you start to realize the benefits of your work it will yield a great deal of satisfaction.

This option is recommended for those if you want to start offering SEO services as a part of your business or if you have multiple websites that you manage. If you only have one website and do not plan on providing SEO services to others this route is probably not ideal considering the time involved to make it successful.

Option 2: Find a Professional SEO Guide

This is the ideal option for most people who want to start internet marketing on their own, learn more about the industry, and yet not invest a considerable amount of time in the project. There are several SEO consultants who would be happy to guide you along the way and assist you in creating a successful online campaign. With this option you will not have to learn everything on your own but will have an experienced professional at your side to assist you in creating a successful campaign. The most difficult aspects of SEO could be handled by your consultant while you could manage SEO implementation.

For example your consultant could assist you in developing a keyword phrase list, sample methods of finding link partners, guidelines for using title, alt, heading, bold, internal link, and meta tags. After you have finished working on a few key pages you could request your consultant review your work and give you further suggestions. At first you will probably rely heavily on your consultant for advice but as time goes on your reliance on your consultant will diminish as you become more affluent in SEO practices and techniques. Another important service your consultant should provide is monthly or weekly progress reports. They will most likely have access to software that will enable them to generate reports such as rankings, keyword phrases, incoming link, and others. Consultants can usually provide other valuable insights to help your business succeed online on subjects such as PPC, conversion, usability, professional image, email campaigns, banner advertising, and other online marketing options.

Although this method will require some investment on your end it is far less expensive than a full-service SEO package and over time the cost will diminish as you become adept at SEO yourself.

How to Decide which Option is Best

When deciding between these two options the most relevant question to ask yourself is how much time do you have to invest in SEO. Through experience I would estimate that having an SEO consultant at your side will reduce the time you need to invest in your SEO project by about 50-75%. You must also determine how competitive your industry is. The difference between a national web hosting company and a local pest control company can play a huge factor in how much time will be required to be successful. Whichever path you choose as long as you are dedicated and determined you will succeed!

Benefits of internet marketing search engine optimization

Because the internet has became a staple in the daily lives of the majority of people around the world, it is important for business owners to realize how much their company can benefit from having a properly optimized web site. Regardless of whether a company sells products or services, having a web site that is properly optimized can and will provide several major benefits for any company.

Obviously, the first major benefit of having a web site for your company is an increase in revenue. As long as your web site is properly optimized by a professional firm, your web site will help you increase your sales of your company's products or services. When a web site is properly optimized, it will be able to attract targeted visitors. This means that the majority of the traffic your web site receives will be people that are already interested in the products or services your company is providing, which will make the task of completing a sale much easier (instead of trying to complete a sale with an un-targeted visitor).

In addition to increasing your company's revenues, a quality web site will increase the awareness of your company's brand. Because people will consistently see your web site when they are searching for something in your industry, they will associate your company's brand and name as a reliable leader in that industry.

Finally, when your company has its own web site, it will actually increase your company's credibility in the off-line world. Because people expect businesses of all sizes to have their own web site, when you are able to print your web site's URL on materials such as business cards or fliers, people will instantly feel that your company is more credible than one of your competitors that has not taken the time to have a web site created for their company.

In order to have a properly optimized web site that your potential customers will actually be able to find when they visit a search engine like Google, you need to work with an internet marketing SEO firm. In case you are not familiar with this terminology, an internet marketing SEO firm combines the practices of internet marketing and SEO (search engine optimization) to provide their customers with the highest level of service. Internet marketing methods include search engine marketing, display advertising, e-mail marketing, affiliate marketing, interactive advertising and viral marketing, while search engine optimization is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via natural search results. Although many firms only focus on internet marketing or search engine optimization, by choosing a firm that is experienced in both fields, you can ensure that your web site is properly optimized from every angle and provides the maximum amount of benefits for your company.

Seo tools poem

I am in my cave, and looking out kind of furtive,

The reason being, psychologically, I am low assertive,

It seems to me with dinosaurs just outside the cave,

Its entirely reasonable now, to be anything but brave,

But the tribal psychiatrist insists that I must face my fears,

And he issued me with stones, and little wooden spears,

And so I went out bravely, into the land of fools,

And got quickly eaten because I lacked the proper tools.

”You see things haven’t changed much,” the tutor whispered sage,

”Psychiatry still screws up, no matter what millennium or age”,

He pauses for best effect, and to let the chuckles die,

”What was needed was a plan, and the means to try.”

”So they tried all sorts of weapons, all sorts of cunning ruse,

But they always ended up, as just amusing little chews,

And just when they were despondent, try as they might,

Along came Dinosaur disaster, in a great big meteorite.”

”So there’s a lesson in the parable, of your cavemen of old,

Don’t listen to the shrinks and to anything you are told,

For if you are to triumph, over the odds against the rules,

You will need a bigger club, or ideally 21st century tools,

We don’t have dinosaurs now with which to fight,

But PCs and internets where things have to be right,

So ignore your Psychiatrist when problems rear their head,

Just go and see your Guru, and use his tools instead.”

The poem you just heard and wondered at in awe,

Is a totally new creation and not cribbed from one before,

And the Tutor is a Fowler, mentioned on the training pages,

Who uses methods slightly more in tune to current ages,

There may not be any dinosaurs lurking on your drive,

But these days a super virus may be all too much alive,

And though Google isn’t Pterodactyl proof, it avoids bad links,

And dodgy linking areas, and your ranking quickly sinks.

So crawl out of your cave and click on the link to tools,

That validate bad html and make your website cool,

That check your viability and show you where you are,

And put you back in charge, instead of watching from afar,

Google will love you, the more you do right and sound,

And these tools will pare away all that is not allowed,

And should you need an expert we are here never doubt,

Not with psychiatric counseling, but with proper technical clout.

One day I stepped outside my cave, and the creatures were in shock,

For I hadn’t brought a little spear, hadn’t primed up my flintlock,

Hadn‘t sharpened up my arrows, with my trusty longbow in tow,

Hadn’t brought a big pistol or a nasty grenade to throw,

No I had brought a massive tank, and though it was overkill,

I flattened all the bloody creatures that ever wished me ill,

And so instead of cowering, like me come out clanking,

And visit the Gurus tools site, and develop your prime ranking.

More than a needle in the hay stack good seo

SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is gearing an article, or any piece of text, in such a way that a keyword or phrase triggers the web page whenever a particular search is done. What this means is that when someone types in a certain word to search on Yahoo or Google, or whatever search engine they use, an SEO article will be more likely to appear at the top of a search list than one that is not SEO based. Finding good SEO writers is how many online businesses manage to succeed, by making sure their web site appears to customers before any competition.

To really understand SEO and how SEO works, you need to understand how the entire search engine process works as well. For example, let’s pretend that you were looking for information online about dog medicine. “Dog medicine” is now your keyword. After you type your keywords in and hit enter, the search engine you’re using (be it Yahoo, Google, Netscape, or any of the others—they all work the same way) will scan the internet for any documents that contain the words “dog medicine.” Once it finds all the possible websites that match those keywords, the search engine then has to sort through the results (and for a really generic keyword, there could literally be millions or tens of millions of websites that contain those words) for the ones deemed “most relevant.” That phrase holds the key. The only way for the search engine to decipher the more relevant articles from the less relevant ones is by the number of times that the words “dog medicine” shows up in an article. An article that mentions those words ten times will always appear in front of an article that only mentions those words two or three times.

It’s that simple. An article that mentions a certain word a lot will be considered “more relevant” than one that doesn’t. That’s the reason why a page selling a particular product often times mentions that product’s name 10, 12, 15 times in a few paragraphs, because it is that type of SEO optimization that allows the web site to be at the top of any search. Employers who want their website to be more visible will hire SEO writers to “pepper” any article with a certain term. For example, this article would do well in a search on “SEO” since the phrase appears several times. It is that type of writing that allows your website or article to go from “needle in a haystack” to “easy find.”

Anatomy of a good sitemap

A sitemap is an aid used in making navigation through a website easier. It contains the structure of the website along with the included links to the major parts and subsections of the website.

A website’s sitemap has a practical and essential use. It makes it easier for visitors to visit through and navigate the website. The navigational help ensures that they do not get lost and that they will not have to look futilely for the information or page that they need. A visitor who immediately finds the information that he needs quickly in a website has a higher chance of coming back for another visit.

Many website administrators, designers and webmasters do not fully exploit the uses and benefits of having a good sitemap. For most of them, merely providing a list of links that do not really give a good service to visitors to the website is more than adequate. For them, as long as spiders can find the pages in their website then they are content. But wouldn’t it better if you can design a sitemap page that is not only big help to your visitors but also adds value to your website?

The characteristic of a good sitemap is that each link has an accompanying description about the target page for each link. This helps visitors who go to your site and would rely on it in navigating through your webpages.

Let’s look at two examples:

Example 1

Link with no description

Rock music

Example 2

Link with description

Rock music, the history of British rock music, From the Beatles to the Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Duran Duran, U2, The best British bands and rock acts in history. Trace how rock music in Britain evolved.

There is a definite difference between these two examples. From a mere cursory look at the two examples it is obviously apparent that the second example is far more effective in giving the proper information to visitors. Website visitors are more likely to appreciate the kind of listing illustrated in Example No. 2. This is because most people are more at home with a search engine style listing because it is easier to navigate. No one would like to visit a website and see a sitemap presented similarly to the first example because there is a complete lack of information.

There is also an added benefit to making a descriptive sitemap. It helps in raising your search engine ranking.

By building your sitemap in such a way that you put all the links to related pages on each sitemap page, you are making, in effect, a themed sitemap page. Let us say that you have 7 pages that all relate to British rock music, by putting it all together you make a British rock music themepage. This kind of page will have the element a search engine considers is essential for a high ranking web page: keyword rich text.

It pays to make a good sitemap. Making a conscious effort to make one will bring great benefits to your website.

High paying lateral keywords

: If you run AdSense on your site you know that some words pay more than others, much more in fact. More than likely you have also learned that terms like "structured settlements" and "mesothelioma" can produce incredibly high PPC revenue, if they show up on your site at all. Unfortunately hundreds of thousands of other webmasters are "on" to this practice judging by the number of sites created regularly to capitalize on the phenomenom. So, where does this leave you? Out in the cold? No, by going after "lateral" keywords and terms you can produce a site that is even more profitable than these other sites. I will show you how you can do just that. What do I mean by "high paying lateral keywords?" Essentially, these are words, or terms, that webmasters dismiss as not being relevant or are unrelated to certain high paying keywords. For instance, you know that the term "free adware" has a nice payout. You gear your article or page accordingly to have AdSense produce the lucrative ads and, instead, you come up with ads that are relevant but not big payers. Should you give up? No, of course not. Instead, research similar terms that can also serve up high paying ads and go with them. In this case the following could be considered: adware blocker adware removal lavasoft adware free adware removal adware spy removal tool remove adware get adware adware search and destroy As you can see, each term contains the keyword "adware" but other words are added. In a recent survey that I conducted some of these "lateral" keywords/terms paid even more than the "free adware" terms. In addition, some nice ads were served up too. What about mesothelioma? Isn't that a hot keyword? Yes, and an overworked one. Lateral keywords for your consideration here can include: lawyers attorneys asbestos cancer lung cancer personal injury lawyer personal injury attorney The common thread with these keywords? Mesothelioma wasn't even mentioned. Sure, when you think "attorney" or "lawyer" you think of ambulance chasing terms like: bextra, malpractice, and physician neglect. Heck, if other ads are served up instead of mesothelioma ads, do not despair. Chances are that the deep pocket lawyers give a nice payout per click for these keywords too! Alright, one final example before I turn you loose to do your own research. The keywords: credit cards. student credit card airline credit card business credit card Visa credit cards credit card consolidation rewards credit cards online credit cards 0% interest credit cards cash back credit cards credit card counseling The options for some keywords are obviously greater than others. If you write your own articles and/or web content you may need to experiment in order to produce the highest paying keywords. Still, these "lateral" keywords will push up your profits almost as much as standard keywords. Now, go and do your own research!

Importance of genuine seo techniques

There are some methods of SEO (Search Engine Optimization) you should follow for your website. SEO is very important for all websites out there in the WWW. Without SEO techniques, which are genuine, you cannot get your website to be known, and get any profit from it.

1. Content is King: Every search engine, Google included, looks for only the content. Content is the most important thing to rank high in search engines. Without content, your site is just another site, without much importance. So create good genuine content.

2. Build links: Building links is utmost important just as content. For this, there are several methods. One such method is writing to the related Webmasters and letting them know of your site’s existence. If they believe that your site has some content, which is linkable, they will definitely link to your content. Maybe some reciprocal linking is required. In that case, you can negotiate with the webmaster and ask them about the reciprocal.

3. No one can guarantee number one in search engines: Google is the most important search engine out there, and even Google top employees cannot guarantee your number one position in Google search. It is the result of your hard work and genuine SEO link building that will position you at the top of the search results. Otherwise, you cannot just get to the top of any search engines.

4. Link building yourself is better than consulting: You may promote your blog with genuine SEO, and that will rank your site higher than any SEO firm can do. So, it is extremely important that you do it yourself. Set apart some time in your daily schedule to build links with any niche blogs you know of. Also, ask your friends who have blogs themselves in the same subject to link into your site.

5. Do not trust blackhat SEO firms: Blackhat SEO techniques are those, which do not do genuine SEO but go by such methods as doorway pages, invisible text, keyword stuffing, etc. SEO should be done through Whitehat methods only. Otherwise, you may be permanently banned by search engines.

6. Do not do reckless link buildings: if your blog is two days old and has 1200 incoming links, then Google will ban you on the third day. So, reckless link building is equal to link spamming. Do not do that.

These and more of the techniques to do good SEO are available in the resources mentioned below. SEO is a very important technique to get your site to the top of search engines, thereby building your brand, getting sales, and profit. So, genuine natural SEO technique is extremely important for the success of a website.

Read this before you submit to web directories

As the number of websites grow everyday, it is becoming increasingly difficult for a new site to attain good rankings on search engines. Since major search engines factor link popularity heavily into their ranking algorithms, building relevant links to your site is perhaps the single most important component of search engine optimization.

For a new site with no or few inbound links, buying text links on more established related sites could provide a boost to your link popularity. But this strategy could prove prohibitively expensive, especially in a highly competitive market where you'd have to buy lots of links to catch up with the competition.

Web directory listing represents a viable alternative to link buying. Apart from driving traffic to your site through direct referrals, web directories provide one-way inbound links to your site, boosting your link popularity and ultimately improving your search rankings.

There are thousands of web directories on the net, with dozens sprouting up every day. Some are general directories; others cater to specific niches. Some are free; others charge inclusion fees. Some are free only if you provide a reciprocal link in return. Many feature both free and paid listings.

The main advantage of a paid listing is the luxury of having your site listed quickly above everyone else's. Free submissions may take several weeks or months for review. If you work on a limited budget, you may want to submit to a handful of paid directories and a few hundred free ones.

Some directories charge inclusion fees that are too high for the listing to be cost effective. When considering a paid listing, look at not only the Google PageRank of the homepage of directory, but also that of the subpage where your link will actually reside. While it may seem like a good deal to have your site listed on a PR5 directory for $15, the offer becomes far less attractive when you find out that the internal page where your link is placed is only PR2.

If you've ever submitted to web directories before, I don't have to convince you that the process is extremely tedious and time-consuming, especially when you submit to a large number of them. Unlike search engines that send out robots to index web pages, web directories rely on more detailed submission forms to gather information about your site. Since each submitted site must be reviewed by a real person, most directories require that submissions are also performed by a real person, as opposed to an automatic script. Many directories use a visual code verification process to prevent automated submissions. Apart from complying with the directory's guidelines, manual submission is the only way to ensure that your site is submitted to the proper category.

Because of the time involved in manually submitting your site and the sheer number of directories on the web, it's important that you know which directories to submit to. Obviously, you'd want to submit to only the high-PR directories and avoid the low-PR ones, right? Not really. Just because a directory has a low PR does not mean that it's not worth submitting to. The directory may be brand new and has not been around long enough to be ranked by Google. In contrast to the more established directories that continually experience a back-log of submissions, newer directories tend to review and list sites more quickly. As the directory becomes more popular, so will your link. So, don't judge a directory solely by its PageRank; rather, base your decision on the overall quality of the directory.

Another important thing to look at is whether or not the directory you submit to is search engine friendly. Search engines like static web pages whose contents stay the same regardless of who visits the page, or when they visit, not dynamic pages that are created on-the-fly. Browse to a couple of categories and look at URL in the navigation bar. If the URL looks like, http://www. godirectory. org/links. php? ax=list&sub=42&cat_id=245, it's probably not search engine friendly. An example of a static, search engine friendly URL is http://www. godirectory. org/dir/713/index. html (notice the ".html" suffix).

Another question to ask is: How easy it is to submit to the directory? How many hoops do you have to jump through to get to the submission form? When you finally get to the form, how many fields does the form have? A directory should ask for pertinent information like your name, email, URL, link title, link description, and keywords, but it should not look like a job application. With the exception of a handful of major directories like DMOZ and Yahoo, you should not have to spend more than 3 to 4 minutes to submit your site.

Another consideration is whether or not the directory has a category specific enough for your site. For optimal SEO benefits from your listing, your link should grouped under a specific category containing sites whose contents are related to yours. Such a grouping makes your listing more relevant in the eyes of the search engines, as well as providing an easier way for visitors to the directory to find your site.

Simply having your site listed on a directory is not enough. Your choice of the link title can determine how much impact your listing will have on your search engine rankings. Ideally, your link title (or "anchor text") should contain the keywords that you want others to search for to get to your site. Since most web directories require a unique link title, however, it may not be possible to select a common phrase like "Free Web Directory" as your link title. This title is likely already taken by another web directory. Simply prefixing the phrase with your domain name, e. g. "GoDirectory. org Free Web Directory", would make the title unique.

Oftentimes, a directory would have several related categories that are suitable for your site. How do you decide which one to submit to? Ideally, you'd want to submit to the category that has the highest PageRank. However, this may not turn out to be the wisest choice as your link may be buried among a zillion other listings. Going with a lower-PR category with fewer competing links may prove to be more beneficial. When choosing from multiple related categories, choose one with a good balance of relevancy, Pagerank, number of competing listings.

In sum, submitting to web directories is a highly effective link building strategy that should be an integral part of any search engine optimization campaign. Manually submitting to a large number of directories is both laborious and time-consuming. Just keep the above points in mind to make the most of your time.

Search engine friendly content management systems

What is a Content Management System?

A Content Management System (CMS) is a third party software application which allows web site administrators to add, update or delete content, photos, and documents to their web site in “real time”. Many web sites are modified using these web-based tools as they require little to no knowledge of HTML or web scripting languages. CMS programs make it easy for a webmaster or site owner who does not know HTML or have access to a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) HTML Editor, such as Macromedia’s Dreamweaver, to update their site.

In today’s high paced web world, a good CMS is integral to the efficient operation of a web site. Many webmasters and web site developers are building database driven, or dynamic web sites, which require a third party solution, such as a Content Management System, to update the content that lives in the database. In addition, a CMS allows the web site owner to outsource content development remotely to contract copywriters and other willing contributors. With built in access level hierarchies, webmasters can allow various users to register as authors and start submitting articles and news to be published on their site.

How do Content Management Systems Work?

Content Management Systems create a dynamic web site environment, where all the content is stored in a database or XML file. Using a web-based interface, the webmaster can select which page they want to update and then can modify the web content in a text editor, with many of the familiar formatting keys that can be found in a word processing program. Once the content has been updated, with the simple click of a button, the CMS will turn their text into HTML code and publish the content to the web site.

Problems Between Search Engines and Content Management Systems:

Historically, search engines have had difficulty indexing dynamic pages. While their ability to index and rank dynamic pages has improved dramatically, there are some basic things to avoid. One of the greatest enemies of search engines is URL strings that contain many URL parameters. URL parameters are variables that are passed to the CMS through the URL, which tell it what information to retrieve from the database. URLs with too many parameters generally make little logical sense to the average user and may also scare off search spiders. For example see:

http://www. mysite. com/mg/vbclass/search. asp? A9_MAKEVBCookie=Yes&vertical=CLTH&cat=Mens&subcat=ID&displayTarget=Subcategory

It is suggested to limit the number of URL parameters to two or three per URL to ensure that that search spiders will not have difficulty indexing pages deep within the web site.

Certain URL parameter names may automatically flag a filter on the search engine. One example is the URL parameter names that contain ‘ID’, such as ‘sessionid’, ‘sid’ or ‘userid’. Historically, search engines detect the term “ID” and assume it is associated with a session dependant variable. As a result, search engines have learned to flag these parameter names and it can cause problems with page indexing. Passing session dependant variables through the URL is a problem for search engines because the spider essentially sees a unique URL each time they visit the site because the session dependent variables change with each visit. For example, on one visit to the site, a page URL may be http://www. mysite. com/page. asp? sessionid=12345. The next time the spider visits the page, the URL may be http://www. mysite. com/page. asp? sessionid=56789. This creates a situation where a spider may think that there are multiple URLs with duplicate content, resulting in penalties which will negatively impact search rankings.

Based on the above, it is imperative to employ a CMS that does not pass session dependent data, such as session variables, through a URL string. Doing so will not only create potential usability issues for the end user, but will also result in indexing problems for the search engine spiders.

Finally, search engines gather understanding from your web site’s content by filtering through the HTML code. For this reason, it is extremely important that your CMS generate HTML code that adheres to the latest requirements of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Use the W3C Code Validator to determine if your code meets the W3C standards. Be aware that some CMS’s add in many lines of proprietary code or JavaScript at the top of the file, which can choke search spiders. This violates a cardinal rule of SEO; ‘To always have more content then code’.

Finding a Search Engine Friendly CMS that will Work for You:

Now that we have explored many of the potential problems with Content Management Systems, lets look at how to go about finding one that will be both search engine friendly and suit your specific needs. First you will need to determine what server platform you will be using. Many Content Management Systems use scripting languages and databases that are platform dependant. If you are married to a particular platform, it may limit your CMS options. Ideally, you will want to find a CMS that is platform independent, which can run on any server.

There are many search engine friendly CMS’s that will allow the web site owner to generate a URL structure that is both meaningful to their users and digestible by search engine spiders. Instead of having a URL that is packed with parameters, you can create a URL structure that looks like this: http://www. mysite. com/children/hats/prodid/121576. Your next step is to check whether your CMS builds HTML pages to the latest standards established by the W3C. Most CMS providers will be able to tell you if their solution generates valid code. If they can’t, then ask for a sample page and run it through the W3C Code Validator. In order to rank effectively in organic results of the search engines, it is imperative that your CMS allows you to update your title tags, meta data and alt tags on a page-by-page basis.

The most important aspects of a good CMS are the ease of use and richness of content formatting features. This one is a no-brainer because the very reason that you are looking for a CMS is that YOU DON’T WANT TO CODE. Any good CMS should provide an editing stage that is similar in feature and function to a standard word processing program, such as Microsoft Word. The technical term for this is a WYSIWYG Editor or a Rich Text Editor. This important feature will allow you to type and format your content using standard buttons and keyboard shortcuts. When you publish the content to the live web site, the CMS will write the HTML, CSS and scripting to display your content as it was formatted during the editing stage. Many Content Management Systems are offering additional technologies, such as RSS feed, shopping cart solutions, forums and live chat integration, which can really enhance the functionality of your web site. The key is to find a CMS that will suit your core needs and then determine what add-ons would be beneficial. The ends result will be a web site that is easy to manage and usable for both your customers and the search engines.

Search engine optimization how does it work what is it used for

The basic concept of search engine optimization is to get more targeted traffic to your website. This is the dream of any website owner, however understanding how it all works can be over whelming. So look at the simplified breakdown that makes this work.

Today's search engine utilizes some of the best algorithms to calculate the relevance of a website to what a potential user is trying to find. These algorithms are very complex and not public available to website owners therefore, what works today may not work in six months. Search engine optimization is a continuing process that should always undergo continuous monitoring and adjusted as search engine will keep changing how they index sites and display the most relevant websites.

The algorithms used to display the results of a particular search are very complex, and often times smart. You wonder how a computer can be intelligent, if you use deceiving methods of getting your website listed, you will soon see how smart they are. These algorithms will ban your site from even being indexed in their databases.

Search engines calculate relevance by using a combination of many methods some of these are keywords, relevant content, and links to your site from other relevant sites, mete data using a combination of this information the search engine look for sites that are well designed and offer the most relevant content to the user.

Successful search engine optimization is a successful implementation of all these factors, in a manner that is consistent with what the search engines "look" for in a website. While working on the search engine optimization for your website keep in mind that search engines read text not fancy images or other design factors. Keeping your site clean and full of relevant content will go a long way in providing you with targeted traffic that will keep coming back.

Search engine optimization the advertising bargain of the century

Yes, in this case the hype is true, search engine optimization (SEO) is the advertising bargain of the century. SEO is the process of tweaking and positioning websites so that they rank well in the search engines. And as most website owners know, if their website does not appear on the first two or three pages of search engine results pages (SERPS), then their website is not being found by prospective clients searching for their products and services. SEO is such a great bargain for a number of reasons.

SEO, the gift that keeps on giving

The benefits of SEO continue long after SEO services have been commissioned. Traditional advertising is like buying a plane ticket: once you’ve gone on your trip, the benefits have been used up. SEO, on the other hand, is like buying a car: it will keep on transporting you long after it has been paid for. That said, for most markets, once the initial SEO campaign has been implemented, good SEO requires a certain amount of upkeep. In this way, of course, SEO also resembles owning a car.

I want it now!

Unlike traditional advertising, which builds brand awareness and may eventually lead to more sales, SEO targets prospective customers who are actively searching for your products and services. They are using the search engines to find you! But is your website ready to be found?

“Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted. The trouble is, I don't know which half.”

John Wanamaker’s adage is still true, but it’s not true about SEO. Why? Because the results of SEO can be quantified and tracked. This is why in a recent article the Economist notes that “Thanks to the power of the internet, advertising is becoming less wasteful and its value more measurable. In terms of efficiency, if not size, the advertising industry is only now starting to grow out of its century-long infancy, which might be called ‘the Wanamaker era.’” (“The Ultimate Marketing Machine,” The Economist, 6 July 2006).
